oil pressure

i feel dumb for asking this question, bc i feel like i should know the answer, but tonight driving to the house i noticed my oil pressure dropping below 40lbs. is this normal when im not on the throttle? i thought it should always be at a constant 40lbs.... when im on the throttle its spot on 40 and never over.

it doesnt go below the hash marks under "normal" pressure on the gauge.

thanks for any help guys..

Mine needle is doesnt drop when idling nor rise when accelarating. The jeep i use to drive did the exact same thing as your truck and ran for 150k with no noticable neagative effects. Sorry not too much help but has it done this ever since you bought it or is it something new?

our trucks have FAKE oil pressure guages. They are set up on a low pressure switch that is activated at 3 psi. once the oil pressure get over 3 psi the ecu controls the guage to read what the factory specs are for a particular rpm range. If the pressure falls to or below 3 psi the light comes on. Dumb hu?

that is dumb. so basically i shouldnt worry? my oil pressure light has not come on, and the "fake" guage isnt dropping that low.... so the dropping and rising is nothing to worry about?, unless of course i get a light on the dash...

Like slimpicken said. So, your gauge is normal. I have a mechanical gauge to install one of these days.

My 'factory' gauge does the same thing.

My Autometer gauges...
12-20psi, hot idle
45-55psi, hot 2500RPM, depending on load
