While changing the oil I noticed several quarter size rust spots. Thought it was a good idea to knock the rust off and paint it. Well I brushed the rust off and it started to leak. I drained the oil, sanded and put some JB weld on it for a quick fix. Now after looking at the cost of a new pan and the time to install it, should I sand and coat the other areas or replace? How long will the JB weld last?

If you have less than 100k miles on your truck it should be replaced under the Cummins warranty, mine was. Would have been a $600+ bill otherwise.

I have 140k on it. Dealer wants $1,600 for the job. I have been parts shopping, pans are 450 range + gasket and bolts.

This is CRAZY. There has got to be someone making these other than Cummins.

I have tried Auto Zone, Advanced, O'Riley, Summit, Geno's, several on line. I can get the 2nd gen cheaper but they will not clear the cross member without a little hammer work. Last time I am going to do to a new pan. Contacted Dodge and they said out of warranty, sorry about your luck. Have an E-mail into Cummins. I assume the pan must have been rusted when it was coated to bubble under the coating? Am I missing something? It just seem unreasonable that the pan would rust thru without a dent, ding or a salt spreader on the truck.

It isn't just Dodges. I have heard of it happening to Fords. Maybe there is a common supplier for oil pans.
Thank goodness my truck has the external lubrication and anti-corrosion system. Nothing will rust under my truck.

I have the same issue right now. Several qtr size rust spots that are starting to seep. What problems will I run into doing the pan myself? Do I need to just lift the front of the engine enough to get the pan off? Or am I missing something? Geez I had no idea the pan is close to $500.

i have kinda the same issue right in the middle of the pan above the cross member its started showing a darker spot and over the past year it as gotten bigger but does NOT drip and i do not lose any oil doesnt seem to be an issuse also i make sure not to poke at it :P long story short let me no guys if you find an aftermarket pan for cheaper

Personally, I'd try to find someone to tig weld a patch on. You'd have to drain the oil before he did it, but it would save a lot of money.

I'm not a professional welder, so I could be wrong. That's just the first thing I would look into before I tried to drop a boat load of money to change the oil pan out.

A second gen pan wont work the bolt patterns are different.

I talked to the dealership on Friday and they want $494 for the pan plus $55 for the gasket and $67 for the 32 pan bolts. Thankfully I get an employee discount ....but the total still is $490 total for the parts.

My pan was showing signs of rusting so I wire brushed it and applied POR-15 following the directions. That has been @ a yr ago and no signs of leaks.

I think that if the pan is seeping that the only fix would be to replace it.
