Oil Level Too High...Guess I'm Headed to the Dealer
Hmmm...I did confirm that they would fill the new filter before installing. I guess that plus the 3gal could do it. If that was the case though it wouldn't have read ok the day it was changed.
If your just 1 1/2 " then it isn't too bad , on the 12v a lot of guys put an extra qt. , but get an oil analysis , that would tell you what is in the oil weather its fuel & metals from damage .

What course of action do you all think the dealer should take in this situation? I could see them just draining some out and sending me on my way, but it sounds like they should at least look at the injectors and/or do an oil analysis?

Let's look at the situation. edited by admin place changed my oil. Told them to prefill filter before installing. They prefill and use an off brand filter. Who know's how much that holds. They didn't let oil drain for appropriate time. Manual says 12 quarts so they dump in 12 quarts. I get home and check the oil it's now overfull. Don't worry cause it's just a little overfull. I drive truck for awhile. Decide to check oil after truck has set for a longer time. Oil is now even fuller. I'am worrried. I think to myself, does the engine run rougher? No. Does the fuel mileage seem lower? NO. Does the engine make any unusual ticking sounds? NO. Does the engine sound any different than before? NO.

Now this is just me while closely watching the oil mark in the future.
Don't recommend everyone do what I do cause I could always be wrong.

Excellent post...thanks! After looking at it in that perspective, I think you nailed it. It makes perfect sense that it was only slightly overfilled when I got home from the "jerk store"
, and then after it sits for a while the level reads even more overfilled. Guess I was too freaked out to put it all together like that.
I feel much better about the whole thing now. I guess I'll just have the dealer change the oil and give me a sample of the old stuff. There's a nice little list of other problems they can focus on instead...like a cracked driver window.

I've been in your situation more than once. That's why I love the word ****. I don't think anyone is more **** than me. I catch myself stepping outside the box and trying to look from someone else's perspective all the time.

Ok, well I checked the oil after letting it sit overnight and it was exactly the same as yesterday. Started it up and ran it for a few minutes then checked the oil again immediately. It was much lower, about halfway between the bottom and top marks of the safe zone.
After about 5 minutes it went back up to the point near the "D". I'm pretty sure it's just a little overfilled from the "jerks" but will still take it in tomorrow to be sure.Thanks for all the great advice everyone!
I agreed with Bluebull two days ago when I posted on this thread. I really don't think you have an injector leaking fuel into the crankcase, just a poor oil change. If there were diesel in the fuel from an injector that is stuck open, there would be several other signs like Bluebull stated.
There is just no way to drain all the oil no matter how long you let it sit. There will always be oil in valleys, turbo and turbo lines that will not drain.
Hopefully tomorrow you can confirm that there is nothing major wrong and everything is good in your world again!

Kinda OT, but does anyone here know if DC is supposed to provide a loaner/replacement vehicle if the warranty work takes longer than a day or two? I thought that was part of the 3/36 warranty, but the dealer is trying to get me to pay for a rental from their lot instead.
I would bet it just got overserviced. I did it myself and I am a mechanic. I did my oil change and it was january, ran it a while till the temp gauge got to over 200 mark shut it down, pulled the plug, let it drain for at least 25 min. filled the filter and installed it, put the drain plug in filled the truck up with 12 qts. Not the first time I changed it either on this new to me truck. After I ran it and checked for leaks shut it down let it sit, checked it and it was over by about 1- 1.5 qts, so I had to drain a bit. When I went to pour the old oul in the empty containers sure enough it was short 1-1.5 qts. Long story short I guess the oil wasnt hot enough to fully drain, I know I didnt burn any prior to the oil change. I never had that kind of issue with my 95, but I will just watch closer.
