Oil Level Too High...Guess I'm Headed to the Dealer
Just checked my oil and it's up near the "D" in "Dipstick". It was only a hair over the max line after my 1st oil change a few hundred miles ago. I hope it's not what I think it is.
Is overfilled oil a definite sign of a leaking injector?

I seen oil changes where they forgot to drain it 1st , so who changed it , if the dealer did it , I would push for a new eng. , if the oil gets high enough to reach the resiprocating parts / crank , rods , the oil foams , then the oil can not make pressure , the oil seperates the crank from touching the bearings , this is where if its liquid it will stand up to the pressure , but if its foam , the oil can not keep the parts from touching/hammering the babit [ soft ] , now the gap gets bigger than the liquid oil can maintain the space [ about .002-.004 ] , so now with a large gap , they hammer till the bearing are gone , if they are not willing to go this route , then have the bearings plastgauged [ a thin thread of wax , that once has been crushed inside of the bearing to crank gap & measured to see if that gap is within tolorance ]
This will make the point either way good [ add oil & go ] or bad [ needs atention ] , my argument would be that you have a new truck , for that kind of $$,$$$ , you want a new truck or $,$$$ .
If it is fuel , oil analysis , that is less of the same , fuel [ thin oil ] will not hold the pressure that eng. oil will , so close examination to see if damage is done , the more miles driven , with either issue the more damage .
good luck .

I can't really tell if it smells like diesel or not. Hopefully if something serious is wrong I caught it early enough by checking the oil. The service manager said it would be fine to drive it in on Monday since it's only about 1.5" above the max line. It's about 8-10 miles from my house. What do you guys think?
I asked if a loaner would be provided if the warranty work took more than a day and they said no. They only offer a 1-way shuttle to get you home.

If you can't tell if it smells like diesel, then there probably isn't fuel in the oil. The diesel smell would be obvious.
The first thing- did you check the oil after it had sat for a while on a level surface? If you answered no to either question, then that can cause the dipstick reading to be way off.
As asked before, who did the last oil change? If it was a dealer or other place, then they may not have allowed it to drain long enough to get all the oil out, or may not have changed the filter and still added 12 quarts.
IMO, change the oil. When it drains into the pan, you will know if it is contaminated with fuel. Also if there is fuel in the oil you would be getting a ton of oil/fuel mix coming out the blowby tube if the level is extremely high which means the undercarriage would have a nice coating of diesel/oil which you would also definitely smell.

I'd say it's an injector if you were parked level and gave it a little time after shutdown. Did you check your oil level after the change? If you had it changed at the dealership they could have not drained it fully, in a hurry kind of stuff. I would insist on them changing it again, maybe the right way? I would also get an oil sample just to be on the safe side, that will tell the story and not allow your dealer to get away with anything. I have watched oil changes at dealerships, truly in a hurry, they run it up on the rack, pull the filter (sometimes/sometimes not) drain out until the flow slows and then in goes the plug with the pan not fully empty. If they missed the filter because of interruption/hurry and added 12 quarts you WILL be overfull.

Thanks for the replies.
The oil change was done at Big O Tires.
I checked it as soon as I got home and it was maybe 1/8" over the max line at most. That was about 700 miles ago and it's a good 1.5" over the max line now. The oil filter is different so they definitely changed that. I guess it has to be an injector.
I have a strong suspicion the dealer will say "we drained some out and see how it does".

This is gonna sound stupid, but turn the dipstick around and see where the line on the underside is, mine will read almost two inches over from time to time, but if I turn the dipstick over the line is right where it should be. Iknow it sounds weird and stupid, but it sure freaked me out! Just my.02
i checked mine first thing in the morning and almost fell out when i saw how much it had in it. i posted the same thing thinking i had a stuck injector. well by the time i drove to the dealer, it was perfect. in my case all the oil drained down to the pan and everything was ok. i hope thats all your problem is instead of something worse

PurNLoud, that's not stupid at all! Actually a very good point. I noticed the same thing with my dipstick and have only been using the mark on the underside. Unfortunately it's about 1.5" over the line when using that underside mark.
Brett, so the level went back to normal after being driven and re-checked? Mine had been sitting for a couple hours before I checked it but I assumed that would yield a more accurate reading since the oil had a chance to settle back into the pan. Anyone else notice a big difference between letting it sit and checking a few minutes after being parked?
