oil filter ....revisited
ok, I'm a newbie, I just changed my oil for the first time and just went into a auto parts and asked for a filter, they gave me a WIX filter, is that bad? I used Delo 40 15w 40 oil. Wix are good filters for gas engines, but I see on here the popular filter is fleetguard. I need educated, please help. :-
Re:oil filter ....revisited
I haven't really heard anything good or bad regarding WIX filters. The only filter I know for sure to stay away from is FRAM, because it is not approved by Cummins.
Personally I use all Fleetguard Filters from www.genosgarage.com

Wix filters are an excellent choice for, at least, gas engines. They are very well made & not inexpensive. They have high quality parts throughout. Spicer/Dana is the parent company. They also make NAPA's name brand filters.
Personally, after doing some research and poking around here, I'm going to use the Fleetguard Stratopore for my truck. At about $8.50 each, they are really inexpensive for how well they are made, IMO. I've paid $12.00+ for filters that are a notch or two below the Fleetguard Startopore. What's more, the regional Cummin's dealership is right across the street from my place of employment! ;D

Here's another bit of oil filter trivia.
I have a Kubota tractor which is somewhat difficult to find an oil filter for it. I usually just have the local dealer get them for me, but this time they failed, so I got one from NAPA. Later I started looking at various companies online sites for the equivalent filter and found that the bypass pressure can vary quite a bit between brands.
What does this mean? I'm not exactly sure, other than different manufacturer's filters, although they are listed as equivalent, are not.
It also brought up the question of what exactly happens in an oil filter. I always thought the bypass valve opened when the pressure got so high (from clogging) that oil could not get through the media. But the bypass values are so low (anywhere from 8 to 20 psi) that it would seem to me that whenever oil pressure exceeds that value, the 'full-flow' filter has turned itself into a bypass filter.
Any thoughts?

The bypass pressure figures are for the pressure drop through the filter media. In other words, if the pressure from the pump is 45 psi, and the pressure after the filter goes below 37 psi, an 8 psi bypass valve will open. A 20 psi bypass would let the filter outlet pressure drop to 25 psi before going into bypass. Your initial thinking on the subject is right, you just kind of out-thought yourself in the end.
