Oil filter question

Went in to my local Cummins/IH dealer to buy an oil filter and asked for a Stratopore LF16035. They did not have this in stock but they checked their system and told me that a LF 3349 was the equivalent. I checked their Stratapore book and dimensionally it is identical but could not see if there are any internal differences. The two filters look the same.
Does anyone know if the LF 3349 filter is an acceptable substitute? If not, why not?
I bought one but did not install it yet. Their invoice shows it as being suitable for the Cummins B. The price was US$4.62 and no taxes.
Also bought a FS19579 fuel filter and was surprised that it was only US$9.86.

Might be the same filter but without the flats around the bottom that accept a socket? Just a thought.

LF3349 is the plain 'ol paper filter, the Stratopore is the upgrade. Nothing "wrong" with it, it just doesn't filter as small or hold as much crud as the Stratopore. Unless you're doing super long oil change intervals there's no reason not to use it. There are probably more 300k mile Cummins engines out there that have never seen a Stratopore than there are engines that have seen nothing else.

I took another look at this filter. It has the Stratopore name on it and has no flats on the bottom for a wrench. I also noticed that it is made in Mexico but has no Spanish words on it. Never noticed where my previous filters were made but now am curious, Where are the filters made that the rest of you use?

It's interesting that the 3349 has Stratopore on it. According the the listings at Geno's the 3349 is the standard (non-Stratopore) filter as wannadiesel said. The Stratopore non-fluted is a 3894. It's the same as the fluted (16035) filter. Just no flutes. Even though the 16035 is the listed application for the '03 and up, the 3894 works just fine and is a buck cheaper. I use a band type filter wrench, so the flutes are of no use to me.

Thanks for all the answers. When I was at the dealer they gave me a printout of a check they did on the LF 16035 with Fleetguard. This sheet shows that the LF 16035 is the upgrade of the LF 3972 which is the Stratopore version of the LF 3972. It also says; "This filter is similar to LF 3894 except it has a fluted shell for 03MY Dodge Ram application".
Have no idea where they came up with the LF 3349 number but will give it a try soon. Must remember to change the oil a bit sooner with this filter.

Mexstan, your oil drain interval will not be affected by the different filter unless you are trying to do extended drains. The regular fleetguard filter will be good for 10k without a problem.

Thanks. I don't belive in extended drain intervals and have always done oil changes sooner rather than later.

The Mopar oil filter is equal to the Standard Fleetguard paper media oil filter and at one time years ago was made by Fleetguard.

Dodge Dealer told me Baldwin makes the filters for Mopar now. Don't know how true this is but if so I can get Baldwin filters alot cheaper from local heavy truck parts place down the street.
