Oil Filter from HELL!!!

Just went to change the oil for the first time and I would have thought that Cummins would have learned how to tighten a filter by now. The drain plug felt hand tight and the filter made me say things the Navy has never heard. I tried a cup wrench-----split that.......I tried a band wrench------not in the same general shape anymore..........I tried a strap wrench-----couldnt make it grip good enough. Thanks to a Snap On guy who is a friend of mine I finally got it off. I used this little claw tool that they have that tightens the more you turn it so it dosent lose grip. I still had to use a cheater bar on the ratchet to get it to come off. Just wanted to warn you guys that have a new truck make sure you have all of the bases covered because its not always just a simple job.

I drive a screwdriver through mine if it's to tight. It helps relieve some of the anger caused by the tight oil filter.

Screwdrivers always the last resort. You aint going nowhere after you punch 2 holes in it.

There used to be a rumor that Cummins had a 600 lb gorilla installing oil filters at the factory......

For the first time I actually spun the end cap type on the original filter. Finally used a craftsman rubber strap type and some dirt for traction. Scary tight!

well the one good thing about it is your next oil change won't be near as bad. i took mine to the dealer and had them change the oil the first time so i wouldn't have to mess with it.

I struggled with mine the first time also. I started out with a band type and after some choice words I won't repeat to myself!! It budged but couldn't go any farther. I ended up with a cup style and it spun right off with my 3/8" impact gun.

No Problems here!!!

I must of been one of the lucky ones. First oil change at 3100 miles and the oil filter came off with minimal effort. Much to my dismay the oil drain plug came off REAL easy....like it was only finger tight.....scary!!!!

I got a regular old filter wrench from wally world for 2.99 & the handle
pivots down. so you just slide it up past the alternator then swing
the handle out over the frame rail toward the tire and give it a turn.
Takes about 15 seconds, but I can't say for the 2wd rigs.
You can't tell the handle pivots till you take it out of the package,
but it looks like a plain o spring steel regular o filter wrench...
Next time I'm at wally world I'll see if I can spot one and get the stock #.
I'll try to post some pics....

Yes the drain plug torque is low.....and they don't leak so don't overtighten them. The filter issue has gone on for years.....nothings changed.
