Thanks Rich for the tech info. I had mine at the dealer when Superduty helped me figure this one out and they had to replace it. From what they told me, they couldn't bill DC if they just tightened it and sent me home. Whether that is true or not, I don't know.
Well at least you got a new pump out of the deal. I'm suprised they just didn't tighten it and charge you the $ to cover their time. Maybe blame the leak on operator abuse making it non warranty. But sounds like you got one of the dealers that looks out for their customer.

My truck was at the dealer for 4 days and it wasn't a great experience. I took it in for the oil leak. They called me to tell me they were going to replace the CP3 and I told them I would be in right away to pick it up and take it to a different dealer. They panicked and asked me to come in and show them what I thought it was. The Service writer, tech, and I looked at the truck when it was on a lift. The tech did grill me several times about having a box on it. I told them that the CP3 was not the problem and they said they would investigate further.

The next morning I called them to see what they had found. They said "nothing, we are waiting for the CP3". At this point I was not happy (read PO'd). I went back in and asked for a different tech. At this point, after PM'ing Superduty, I knew where the leak was coming from. I showed them and they ordered a new plug and fixed the leak. This tech was very willing to listen to what I had to say.

When I picked it up, they asked me to go easy on them when I recieved the DC survey. I have yet to recieve it by the way.

As far as the dealership goes I would grade them like this:

Sales- A
Service writers - A
Parts Dept - C
Diesel Techs (particularly the first one I talked to) - F-

I knew it wasn't the CP3 and I didn't want them tearing into the fuel system on a brand new truck. It took some work and research to figure it out. All they replaced was that accessory plug, not the CP3. The truck was 3 weeks old with 2000 miles. I had just traded my 2004.5 WHILE it was in the shop for... you guessed it, a leaking CP3.

Think about it this way. The research I did on this website saved DC the cost of 1 rebuilt or new CP3. That means we all might save a few pennies on our next truck

I figured this all sounded too good to be true. Is there any other product out there that we as a consumer will allow the product supplier to get away with being so incompitant? From talking to others that own Fords and GMs there is no diference in the level or quality of service. I think having the big four only gives us the perception that we have a choice.
Sorry just tired of it all

Well i tightened it up

Not wanting to take it in to the dealer I found that the oil leak was in fact coming from the plug not the CP3 pump. Surprisingly the plug was pretty loose so I tightened it up and will see if that works. Thanks for the input.

where exactly is the CP3 pump, I have what looks to be like oil dripping from the bottom of the power steering pump, it is not power steering fluid though. I also have oil dripping on a wiring harness right below the fuel filter which I thought to be caused by the breather tube, I took the breather tube off and pressurized it and found no leaks. could this be caused by the CP3?

if you look in post #4 right behind the plug that is circled is the cp3,check to see if its fuel or oil dripping at your powersteering pump,if its fuel you got the famous cp3 leak,if its oil it could very well be the plug that is circled in post#4.

I wish I would have asked here before I took mine to the dealer. It was there 4 days for something this simple. The hardest part of fixing anything is the diagnosis and I am still learning here. I'm glad you got this taken care of!

Regarding where the CP3 is. Like Rich said, it is right behind the circled part, in light grey with fuel lines coming into it. One thing that I will say is that if your CP3 is leaking diesel you should be able to smell the fuel even without opening the hood. That is what tipped me to look on my 04.5. It was only leaving a few drips a night on the garage floor, but I could smell it when I was getting in it in the morning.

There is no diesel smell at all. It must be the plug thing.

You can pull the accessory belt out of the way slightly and see if that plug is leaking from above. it was pretty easy to see on mine because the truck was pretty new and still clean inside. If you have oil dripping from the harness below the fuel filter that is further back. It is likely that the wind has thrown oil from the leaking accessory plug onto that harness, but check around and make sure. Like LT said, you can see and tighten that plug in just a few seconds. You'll know if it's loose.

There are several people on this forum that have lots of experience with the Cummins. If that plug is not it, you may want to start a new thread and post pictures.
