Question Tube drips oil slowly? (vent?)

There is a tube which points straight down from the engine. I assume it is the vent for the crank case. Does the cummins have a filter or need a filter for this vent? Is it supposed to leak oil? Mine drips slightly while parked not bad, just some drops that add up over time, leaves a speckled look on the drive way.

What should I know about this vent and its problems? I have heard about clogging on here before is this a big issue? What do I need to know?

If you are refering to teh 3/4 inch or so hose on teh drivers side towards teh rear of teh engine.. eys that is the crankcase vent tube adn dripping a little oil is normal( so i have been repeatedly told)... Dont know much about teh clogging problem, haven experienced it.. I wold imagine keepign the end of it from filling with road gunk would be a good idea..

Yeah, they all drip a little from there. No need for a filter, it's pretty much a one-way street. If you peer under there with the engine idling after a hard run you will likely see some vapor blowing out of the vent.

You could do like the rest of us and proofread your post before you click "submit."

You also have a couple hours to edit your post if you made some particularly embarrassing goof.

Thumbs up

Thanks guys!

Does the vent tube have a check valve in it? If you were going to set-up for a snorkel/river fording would it need to be routed differently?

Hey Chrisreyn! Download the spell checker its the [ABC + check] button in the upper right hand corner of the message box, works wonders. Also do what Dave said and preview the post.

No, the vent tube is open to the atmosphere. There's a couple of baffles to try to catch most of the oil before it blows out. When the engine is running there's always blowby coming out. No engine has zero blowby.

If you wanted to do deep fording you could have it dump into a catch can and then run a vent tube up from the catch can to whatever height you thought you needed. Just remember to dump the catch can now and then.

To lessen the "Blow" that is/was carrying the oil out, I removed the OEM oil fill tube assembly from the front of the engine, and replaced it with a 24v crankcase vent and tube I got off of Ebay. I cut the OEM oil fill tube short and epoxied it into the front valve cover.

I'm a bad speller too. If you have Microsoft Word, you can always type your responses up in that first and let it do the spell checking for you. Or if you use Mozilla Firefox as your web browser, it has a built in spell checker. It'll highlight any typos automatically so you can correct them. It even has a built in dictionary offering possible solutions to whatever words might come up as misspelled.
