oil in cp3?

I had a leaking cp3 pump replaced 5 days ago by dealer. Today, I have a oily mess under truck on drivers side. I checked crankcase oil level and it is good, it is not coming from crankcase blow-by tube. The oil is black and real thick, almost like paint, however it doesn't have a smell to it. The engine oil has a certain smell and this does not. I have oil sprayed as far forward as the fan and truck is making a funny noise at idle. Could this be oil that came from cp3 pump? not sure if cp3 has oil in it or not, I thought it was just fuel. It also appears that it blew this oil everywhere and now, I can't see where it's leaking/blowing anymore. Truck is running fine otherwise.

Thanks,
KD

I do believe there is oil in the front side, someone else may have more info on it.

There is no oil in the CP3, it is fuel cooled and lubed.

if the cp3 doesn't have oil in it, any ideas as to where/what this other oil could be. I really do not think it is engine oil. It must be coming from the front part of the engine because the fan had oil on it. It really looks like it may be at least a quart, it covered the front axle and steering rods.

I wounder if your fan clutch is leaking??? I have never seen the fluid out of a cummins fan clutch but maybe it is black and looks like oil???

OK, the CP3 doesn't have oil in it. But it has a O-ring which seals the pump to the engine. The CP3 is connected to a gear that connects to the cam shaft gear, thats how the pump rotates. If the oil is from the CP3 it would be from behind the front engine cover. You said that the oil is as far up as the fan, and being blown back, I would look at your front engine cover their is a gasket that could be your leak. If not the cover then it could be the front engine seal, its behind the crank shaft pulley.

be VERY careful when you check that front cap. They are very easy to break

as for the noise does it sound kinda like the fan hitting the shroud just off idle or if you bump the throttle also when grid heaters kick on and off,if so mine has been doing that and I wish I knew what it is,its not the fan shroud it sounds more like bearing issues.

yeah don't crank on it with a 3/8 ratchet with a piece of pipe on the handle, just snug it,mine leaked from the factory because either it was never tightened enough or it worked loose a little bit

I checked the cap with my hands and I can't see that it is loose. If the cap is loose and thats were it leaked, how can you replace the oil. Is it engine oil or something else? It doesn't have the consistency or "the smell" of normal crankcase oil, this is whats throwing me off. I started the truck today and I can't see where anything is leaking now. Thanks for all the replys.

That was leaking on my 06. It would drip down onto the crank position sensor.

This maybe a dumb opinion but, for sh*ts and giggles check the power streering pump! Mine overflowed when my left "U" joint was starting to size due to the extra work it had to do to steer! Just a thought! Good luck!

my 05 is leaking at the front of the engine driver side. the dealer is going to replace the cp3 that is what they said was leaking oil. it is on national back order though. i just noticed about a foot in diameter spot of oil on the ground when i left work this moring i haven't looked under the hood yet it's pouring down rain. i brought the truck in for a oil leak at the rear between the engine and trans. i thought it could be a rear main but it is just damp it could be the vent tube? the dealer found the leak at the injection pump all i noticed was it was a little wet with feul didn't see any oil like they said. but i sure did notice the oil today! i'll let the dealer worry about it bring it to them on a trailer!
