I change the engine oil/filter at about 5 to 6K miles with Valvoline Premium Blue (Has "C" on bottle). For me changing the filter fom the top is easyier. The first time the filter is on extremely tight. The type of oil you use is very subjective here. The book says to do the tranny at 30K. I believe this is a must. I don't know about the 6-speeds. I do filter about every 20K and just ATF+4 every 10K. It's easy to do the tranny yourself. I do the axles when I just feel like it. Probably annually with 75W140 in back and 75W90 in front. Must be synthetics. I think the book says 30K. Fuel filter (7micron) about every 10K of less. Filters are easy to do. Again this is subjective.
I buy my fuel filters from Cummins or Freightliner. About 1/3 the dealer price.
I buy the oil filter from the dealer at about $10, plus they see me there buying stuff.
Stick around this and other sites and you will quickly become experienced.

If you can afford to do your changes before the manual states to, do it. If it is clean on the inside, the entire system will give you years of service. I change oil and filter, as well as fuel filters every 5,000, religiously. I do differentials every 15,000, transmission every 25,000. Short and sweet, you paid for the truck so it is ultimately up to you as to how often you do it, but an engine that you take care of will take care of you. It is easy to do yourself, and it gets you away from your wife for an afternoon .
