Synthetic is good

As long as you feel comfotable that you have it broke in good then I say put the synthetics in.

Welcome to DTR

Plenty of oil info in the history files. Use the search button and you'll have hours of reading.

I really think someone broke into his cardboard box under his bridge and stole his ID.

I run 5w-40 Synthetic (Either Amsoil or Mobil) here in Alaska. Works great, Oil doesn't "thicken" up, and the truck cranks no problem. Oil press comes up quick as well. I definately wouldn't run Dino in the winter, in those temps. My first winter with my truck I lived in Montana, and with Dino in the engine, at sub-zero, the oil was going around the crank in one solid block! (At least it sounded like it!) Really slow cranking and oil press was pretty slow to rise. If your worried about break-in, come spring time, switch back to Dino.

I haven't run anything but Valvoline premium blue in mine for 2 winters now and it fires right up, even when unplugged @ -25°. Oil pressure comes up quick, seems to be a non issue for me. Save the money you'll spend on synthetic and put it towards an Espar, that will make your Alberta winter ALOT better!

I would tread warily with using the 30 weights, I have contacted Cummins numerous times for consistency and found that they always strictly advise against 30 weights for our particular engine. (I was considering using the HDD 5w30 myself at one time.) I live in Edmonton myself and use a 0w40 or a 5w40. Esso makes an awesome 0w40 that will perform fabulously in our temps. Your truck though.

I've heard that the Amsoil heavy-duty 5w30 will work in our Cummins just fine. My self I will not run dino 15w40oil when the temps are lower then the middle teens with out it being plugged in for at least 4 hours before stating it. I have been told by many that dino 15w40 at 10 degrees will start to cause problems with the bearings. I would not want to even think what dino 15w40 would do to a crankshaft and bearings at minus 25 below if it was not plugged in at nigh.

I just changed over to 5w40 Rotella and I have only 10,600 on my truck and will go to Amsoil next spring. I really didn’t like the sound of the lifters or the any sounds for the first 6 minutes after it was started when the temps were in the low 20’s at night with out it being plugged in.

i currently run that 0w40 xd3 year round... oil sample looked pretty good at 10,000km but with my driving style [stop/go traffic] it took me 9 months to get that 10k on the oil.. with my driving, i don't really want to go past 10,000km on the 0w40..

I just put the XD3 0W40 in tonight. Weather was mild, uncommon for Edmonton at the end of October. Thought I would get the synthetic in, so I was ready for winter. Maybe it is just me, but I have been paying attention to the engine when it is cold, and I am convinced that a thinner synthetic will work better than the 15W40 dino I have been using. It is a group IV PAO as well.

I just put in 15-40 syn from Petro-Canada. They use it in all their heavy OTR rigs and have very good luck with it. I had 50,000 kms. on it. No cold weather yet but the oil pressure sure comes up fast now. I was using their dino oil before that as were some of my friends. No complaints.

I think that Petro is synthetic 5w40. Or do they make a synthetic 15w40?
