Question Oil change interval question.

The owners manual states that the oil can be changed at 7500 miles. this is the severe duty interval. I had the dealer change mine at 5000 miles to be safe. The service tech at the dealer stated that If I wanted to keep this truck that I should be changing the oil at 3000 miles no matter what. What is safe for this engine (5.9 Cummins turbo diesel)? I tow a 25ft travel trailer every now and then. Other than that, its back and fourth to work.

Another question. In a Genos Garage catalog I saw this stuff ( forgot the name) that was suposed to rid the smell after an oil change. I thought this was just over spill causing the smell of old burnt diesel.

Is there some other reason I am getting this smell. It only last for about 1000 miles after each oil change.

90% of the members here change at approximately 5,000 - 6,000 miles from what I gathered over the past couple years... Ask the million mile cummins guys when they change their oil... i gaurentee it's not at 3,000... they would be changing it every other day!! Listen to your dealer about as far as you can throw them...

EDIT- I guess I should say not every dealer, in fact my dealer always puts till the next 5,000 mile mark on my sticker...

I've always done mine at 5000 miles, but am now using the rotella T synthetic 5w40 and plan to change it at every 10000. Cost twice as much, should last twice as long. No problems so far, and it definitely cranks over faster on a single-digit morning. It's been in there for a little over 5000 miles.

My Canadian owners manual calls for changes at 12,000km (7500 miles) or 24,000km, seems a bit mich to me.
Did my first a little less than 5000 km (3000 miles), second after 9000km, (5600 miles), then 7000 km.

The mechanic at my dealer recomended every 9600 km or 6000 miles...

I' do them at 5000 km (3000 miles) in our car and in the old Ford truck I used to have.

I change oil and filter at 5K intervals, the last two oil samples I sent into Blackstone Labs they recommended going to 6500 miles for next oil change said oil I sent in at 5K had plenty of life left in it. Sounds like the service tech was trying to drum up some business for the dealership to me.

of course he wants you to come back every 3000 miles. Theyd talk you into coming back for a change every 1000 miles if they could Every 5000 to 6000 miles for me as well. reason being I dont fit the normal 7500 mile service schedule(I dont think anybody does thats using a truck as a truck ) nor do I have such extreme conditions that warrant 3000 or 3750 miles and is just wasting time and money. So I go with a happy medium

I change between 5,000 & 8,000 miles usually, depends on where I've been driving and such. But I just got a bypass filtration system so intervals will be changing.

I change mine every 7500. I also sample the oil every 3500...i.e. at the mid and end of oil change interval. So far, 14.5k miles and no indications of oil trouble. All wear metals are decreasing, just as they should for a motor that has broken in! Next sample going in next week.

Oh, and if you have not seen the post, Flyin-J has Valvoline premium blue 15W40 , 2/11.99...I bought 12gal. This is on sale through the end of March!

That must be one happy CTD.

I do the same thing, when I think of it.

Wear will increase with soot levels regardless of the type of oil that you're using or how much you paid for it. The 305 hp engine seems to be fairly clean burning, my 235 hp CA engine evidently runs at the lowest temps of the 3rd generation engines but (from what I've read) also generates the most soot. I've assumed that this is why my engine has an oil change frequency 1/2 that of the 305 hp. I don't know how the others fare.

My manual states change engine oil at 7500 miles or three months whichever occurs first ? So after three trouble free years of ownership, been changing it every three months and oil test once a year. Works out to 5-7k between changes. If your lucky to have a cummins outlet, with a power booster membership. Buy the five gallon pail of Valvoline PB, filters and get 10% off. Best part is return the empty pail and they re-fill it from their bulk tank, more cost savings........SWEET

Now what if your towing all the time?

I tow pretty much daily with my truck and was doing them every 3k but sometimes that can be once a week but a lot of times it ends up being every 2 weeks or so.
