off road diesel

I seached for this topic and did not really see any posts...

Is it OK (other than the legal issues) to run off road diesel in 3rd Gens? I just happen to have a lot of it sitting around for my forklifts and crane. I used to use it in my last truck frequently with no apparent problems...

What is the physical difference between the two?

Thanks for your thoughts...

As far as I know, there isn't any difference other than the dye, but it is also my understanding that you REALLY don't want to get caught with that stuff in a street going vehicle.

It used to be higher sulfur content, but from other posts on the subject, it just has the dye added.

And, on another note, it's not just a dye,
but a chemical they can detect in quantities as low as 1 part per million.
So, even after filling up with normal diesel a couple ten times, there will be enough left to still detect.

Maybe it's were I live but have never heard of anyone ever checking for off road in a tank of fuel EVER.Its like tags and ad valorm tax on horse/boat/car trailers I never buy tags for ANY of these.I travel all over and out of state.NEVER have been asked for a tag or tag receit on any trailer I pull so why spend the money. It brothers MY wife badly but until someome ask me for a tag on a trailer I refuse to pay good money for one.Going on 20 odd years not buying tags for trailers.I have SEEN WRECKERS filling up with off road and no telling how many cattle/farmers around here use it out of their own tanks in their trucks. Its a gamble but I've just NEVER heard of anyone being CHECKED.

Yeah I haven't seen much checking going on here in MD either. Once in a while you will see them do it on some of the big rigs, but 3/4 ton and 1 ton pickup trucks are the least of their worries. Not to mention, it's a lot harder to take a fuel sample on one of our trucks vs a big rig. If dyed diesel was easier to find, I would use it all the time as it is around a dollar a gallon in most places.

It seems like a neat idea till you get caught! And the DOT in WV does check pickup trucks. One guy I know that got caught was talking too much about how he ran it all the time. If you run it keep your mouth shut and don't spend to much time in WV.

Got a $300.00 ticket for off-road in Arkansas. I know of men who have ran THOUSANDS of gallons in their trucks. Ticket was a mail in that was NOT put on DL. No driving record mention at all. Huh...5000 gal X $0.50 Huh...

I ran red diesel in my old truck for 5 years (220k)without problems. I would fill my 100 gal. bed tank in the US then use the red in Mexico. Yes, I may have had some in the main tank when I returned to the US. My excuse would have been that I bought it in Mexico as I had toll road receips to show that I was out of the country.

p.s. the diesel in Mexico is about $2.20 a gallon and increasing.

A buddy here in Oregon is afraid to run dye in his road grader when roading it down the highway--it is apparently a $25,000 fine if the % of dyed is too high! Ouch!

Dyed Diesel

There might not be much difference between on-road and off-road diesel chemically, but there is a big difference legally. I don’t see much difference in using off-road diesel in your on-road CTD than cheating on income taxes. Someone somewhere has to pick up the difference. Call me stupid, but I see it as stealing. There is a guy down the block from me that runs German plates on his Mercedes. He has been doing it for as long as I can remember and he obviously has not been stopped or caught. Every time I drive by his house I want to spit. Go ahead and run dyed diesel, cheat on your taxes, work the system. You’ll probably never get caught. Most people who commit crimes don’t get caught. Teach your kids the same thing. You’ll love the results

Thanks for your thoughts Gordonville!

I simply started this thread with the question of compatibility of offroad diesel and 3rd Gen CTD. How you came to calling me a thief, a tax evader, a system worker, and having potential of being a bad parent (if I ever am one), puzzels me...

Did you wake up on the wrond side of the bed this morning?

Please stick to the context of the thread and keep your personal, political, and legal opinions to your self righteous self.

If I decided to go to the mountains for a month...or Mexico like another ...ofroad would be legal. Did you think of that one?
