obdll or obdlll
hi again, does the 2004 early build truck ie, 305/555, have the obd2 or obd3 installed. If it is the two, will a standard obd 2 scanner thats at the auto part stores just plug right in?...
iam am looking to just do simple functions like code reading and erasing, but if i could do more that would be a bonus...
anybody have anything like this? or what is the best one to get?

I regularly use my OBDII on 03s and 04s when friends screw things up from constant tinkering. It works flawlessly, so those years are without a doubt OBDII.
However, the two 04.5 600s I have tried it on wouldn't work correctly. OBDII or III I don't know (haven't looked in to it), but the 600s did not like it. Could just be my brand of scanner. After generating many communication errors on both 600s I have tried, it would eventually let me clear codes, but it wouldn't show me anything currently stored in the ECM. Had to do the "key on three times" to verify codes were gone.
The cheapo units at the auto parts stores might not last forever, but they will work fine on your 04. Lately, I have been seeing a cool little OBDII hand held at Wal-Mart back in the automotive section for like $60.00. Oh, when trying to clear codes on a truck with a TST plugged in, it will not always link up. Have to unplug the TST to get it to work. If you have troubles and there is a box under the hood, unplug it and see if that helps.

There is no such thing as OBD3........nothing!
There is OBD1 (up to 1995) and OBD2 (1996 and on).
What the 600's have is something with the PCM and the Scanners not always wanting to scan.
I can hook up our smog machine to the truck and it will clear and read codes. Buy our handheld unit, will read the codes but not clear them.

My Innova Handheld OBDII unit has trouble with my 600 also. It will read the generic codes. It takes more than one try to clear some of them. It sees none of the DC unique codes, it will just get error.

not yet anyways... it is on the way, and it will have some nasty features on it... i've heard rumors that there will be transponders intergrated into the system, which will transmit any emissions related DTC and you will get a letter in the mail telling you to get it fixed... not hard to do. onstar can read codes on the gm vehicles i think...
