NV5600 stuck in first gear

Need help with a tranny issue.

My wifes '03 nv5600 locked up on her while going 35 mph in fourth gear. She said it was making a growl/howl noise shortly before a loud bang, and truck sliding sideways. Had it towed to the house to diagnose.

The tranny seems to be locked up in 1st gear now. When I put it in 1st it works fine, but when I put it in any other gear, it bogs the engine down and wont move. 1st shift doesnt quite feel like its engauging/disengauging now either, but the other gears feel normal. Clutch works fine.

Under the truck there was a slight trans oil leak on the bottom of the bell housing (bad input shaft seal?) and when I removed the pto side plates there was only about one quart of oil left in it. There were no major metalic shavings, only some slight brass micro shavings. All the gear sets that I could see were all intact with no discoloration. With the drive shaft removed, engine off and the clutch depressed, all the internals move smoothly with no unusual noises. I was thinking bad bearing somewhere, but all felt smooth. I'm at a loss at the moment.

Looking for any help or ideas to figure out why or how it got stuck in 1st gear when it was in 4th when the mishap happened, and what I can do to fix it.

Locked up and went sideways and stuck in first now... something must have broken apart and it's moving around. I bet there's no easy fix! I'd look for someone to rebuild the box you have if everything looks that good. Might save some money to only fix what needs to be fixed. The consenses on these boxes is... the normal fill of 4.5 qts is barely enough to get lube up to all the high points. No telling how long it was driven below the normal fill. There's probably serious damage where you can't see it if it only had 1 qt in it. Craig

Have/had a 99 powersoak, I was doing 75mph hr when things locked up on me. Truck would run when I pushed the clutch down and would sputter and try to die when I let it out. It was the tranny, all 6 gears were fried. I hope that is not the case with yours, but I hate to tell you, sounds like it is.

So the general consensus is the tranny is shot. Now the repair stage.

Do I have it rebuilt or do I get a reman unit?

And, does anyone have any leads on where to have it rebuilt or where to get a remanufactured one. Dont want to get screwed with a crappy shop or cheap parts.

Blumenthals is popular and you could do a search to find others. Maybe Standard transmission too. I got a nv4500 mainshaft kit from them in 98. Craig
