nv5600 clutch change hints

changing the clutch tomorrow. any of you guys just leave the front driveshaft connected at the diff, and only unbolt is with the hex bolts at the tcase? just tie the dshaft to the left framerail?

which way(foward or aft) is the motor going to tip once the crossmember and trans is out? i need to support it with a jackstand and would rather not find out which direction when the fan hits the radiator. thanks

I disconnected the front shaft from the T-Case to make it easier to divorce from the tranny. I tied both shafts to the frame rails. My motor tipped aft. Not much though. We put a floor jack under it so we could manipulate it up and down when it was time to put everything back together. Hope this helps.

that does help. thanks marshall. so did you unbolt the carrier bearing and tie up the whole thing, or leave the carrier in place?i am doing this one-man-show tomorrow and dont want to kill myself too much.

I dont have a carrier bearing. mines a short box. I hope you got a good tranny jack. we did mine with a big floor jack, but there was 2 of us.

Going to need a potapower or a bottle jack and a 4x4 to spread the frame rails some to get the crossmember out...

No bottle jack?? Soem have had success with a BFH, but mine wasn't going NEwhere that way. Find a bottle jack its the easiest... Drill a hole in the end of a 4x4 just big enough for the botle jack end to fit, cut to fit inbetween frame rails with jack... Crank away

guess i could use the jack for the truck, its a bottle jack. my only jacks are 2 four ton floor jacks.

Could work?? Might be strong enough.. Don't have to spread much at all just enough to relieve the pressure on the crossmember. U have a pilot bearing puller?

You dont need a jack to get the crossmember out.


Rather than me right this all out again here is some advice from a post that I wrote:

Get a tranny jack that will withstand 1000 lbs. They have them on ebay for about $325 delivered (OTC Scorpion).

Use a mechanics mirror and a flashlight to line up the input shaft to the spline hubs once you getting it back together. I did that and then used the bolts to walk the tranny back in evenly....worked like a charm.

Go to auto zone and buy 2 long 4' extensions for a 3/8's ratchet. You will also need some RTV to re-seal the shift tower thingy to the tranny.

I would also advise buying a snap-on barring tool that is available on snapon.com for around 60 bux. This will let you brake the engine from turning over when you torque the flywheel bolts.

Flywheel bolts torque to 101ft lbs/ 137NM.

PM I'll give you my cell if you get into any trouble with it.

You can do it all yourself but I strongly advise having a strong helper as well because the NV5600 is mammoth.

Make sure to unbolt the transfer case from the tranny.

Also dont remove the tranny support beam without supporting the tranny the result can damage your engines belt and fan cooling system.

...Oh yeah forgot to mention use to ramps to drive the truck up onto. Then jack up the rear of the truck and use jack stand to make the truck level. This will give you room to work on it from under if you dont have a truck lift in your garage.
If you are doing the work say in the driveway I also suggest buying a 4'x8' piece of 3/4" or 1" plywood so you can roll the tranny jack around on. Makes it a bunch easier.

4 1/2 hours by myself. i wouldnt recommend doing it alone, but i had no other option. it is a bear to do alone. next time i will wait until someone else is available. thanks for the info.

well thanks. i've been a heavy mobile equip mechanic for years and now am the apprentice instructor for the same trade, so technically it wasnt a difficult job, moving that heavy stuff by myself was the challenge.
