NV-5600 Fluid Capacity/Gear Noise

Installed clutch kit @ 103k miles. Drained transmission thru lowest PTO cover bolt hole. At reassy. refilled trans thru tower cover opening (vehicle level on stands) with level plug removed over drain pan. Took exactly 1 gal. with a few teaspoons run out thru level check hole. Finished assy. and checked fluid level with "finger method", exactly where manual states. Drove a few miles and noted very slight "rattle" in 6th gear. Immeadiately rechecked fluid level, still proper per manual. Checked dealer spec. on capacity, shows 9.5 pints (4.75 qts.); Haynes shows 4.8 qts. Rechecked level at trans plug again and still dead @ full level. Are specs right? Will .8 qt. low cause problems? Do I need to overfill past level plug thru tower? Any helpful comments/suggestions?
Thanks.

It's a good idea to add an extra quart to the NV5600. I'm running 6 quarts.

What fluid did you use?

Dealer juice at $23.00/qt. Don't know of equivalent. Any suggestions? I guess overfill will not cause foam/seal problems? Thanks for reply.

Yes, overfill by at least 1 quart, 2 would be fine too. Synchromesh does not foam. NV 5600 are notorius to be build with less oil than supposed to.
The shop that rebuilds them specifically requested to use only Synchromesh and to overfill.

Where are you located , I have some leftovers new bottles.

Did you replace with a stock clutch? It appears that all aftermarket upgraded clutches induce more tranny noise especially the G-56.

Valv- Thanks for info and appreciate the offer on the fluid. I have located some at an AZ (had wrong part no.). Transmission now running 6 qts. of it, seems quieter. Problem is that clutch is "rattley" in N with pedal out. Push pedal to full depth and problem goes away. Clutch operates smoothly and no slippage noted. Guess I'll wait and see. BTW if i'm reading receipt right, AZ p/n is265000 3501.

Danderson-at time clutch went out, Dodge had no clutches in system and 193on national back order according to 2 area 5*. As truck is DD, I went with NAPA/Oreilly kit (disc/PP/Pilot and T.O. brgs.), off the shelf. Also I wanted to closely approximate the stock "feel" and noise of the OEM unit (not a high performance guy-turn key/go). So far clutch operates smoothly and positively, but is somewhat noisier. Oh well 2 out of 3 ain't bad. Currently about 2800 mi. on new one.

The Nu-Venture procedure for the 5600 and 4500 oil level is to the level hole with the TRANSMISSION level. Problem is, your truck being level does not make the transmission level. Dodge kind of removed this procedure line in about the 2004 manual.

Is your shift rod secure?

You say you have a rattle in sixth gear, so I would assume it is the sixth gear or shift linkage inside of transmission that is loose. Otherwise, I would think it would be heard in all gears.

In your later post you mentioned the replacement clutch. Clutch plate springs would also make the same noise. Especially, if they were backwards. Although you mentioned that it would go away when the clutched was depressed, so that rules my theory out. I believer the stock clutches have a wrap that dampens the spring rattle a bit. Another possibility is the clutch disc that has thrown some padding material. Best solution, is to re-pull the transmission and take a look at both the clutch and the transmission for broken parts.

Thanks to all who responded, I think I may have misdiagnosed original noise as NV5600 related instead of new clutch related, especially in light of fluid level question (now fixed). Friend says my truck sounds like his did after his clutch replaced-louder. After reading other threads on clutches, it appears that increased noise is somewhat "the nature of the beast" after clutch change. Thanks again.
