nv 5600 being replaced is a smart move
visiting my friends that work in the shop at dodge. another powerstroke with 38 miles locked up, poor ol boy did not even have the paperwork done, so they gave him another one. had a nv 5600 on the bench with 1500 miles and it was trashed. a farm truck of course but this was not the first 5600 to be worked on. mechanic said the gears are so heavy and no support in the middle so when trying to shift fast or guys in the mud trash this so called brut. I myself don't care for my 5600 either, you have to wait for it to spin down when shifting and is getting notchy with higher miles, just turned 42k. maybe the getrag will be more like the ford which is built into 3 seperate housings, very easy to work on if you have to.
The G56 is a Mercedes Benz tranny. Not a Getrag.
Ford uses the ZF tranny, which is a piece of junk. Shifts are even worse than the NV5600.
When was the last time you changed the tranny fluid? Mine was getting notching at 15k miles and changed the fluid with Pennzoil Synchromesh made a world of difference.
Also, might want to check the clutch with the mods you're running.

The G56 is NOT A GETRAG! For the 100th time. Not because I have one but the NV5600 is PROVEN .Yes its notchy to shift but its a brute.I understand the reasons behind the change. One MAIN reason is NOT to buy units from a outside vendor.More Damiler influence and selling to themselves."They" make more money. That and the G56 is probaby smoother shifting.Yet to be determined if its a smart move for the COMSUMER.It was a smart move for THEM money wise I'm sure.
I donno, I have near 150000 on mine its been flawless. Course I don't work it hard, only 30,000 gross. The NV5600 is a pretty strong trans for a pickup. Of course I didn;t have a problems with the NV4500 either. Sounds like the boy in the farm truck needs to take some driving lessons. And speed shift a 5600, I don't think so. When it is used as it is supposed to be, it is a good trans. You can break anything if you abuse it enough.

Torsional resonance, Bob. Torsional resonance. The "fix", unfortunately, is the questionable dual-mass flywheel coming out with the G56, but the cure may turn out to be worse than the disease!
Yeah, the NV5600 rattles, is slow shifting, notchy and all that other stuff, but it yanks our 16,000 lb GVWR 5th wheel wherever we want to go and gets us home every time.

When mine was new, it had a rattle when slowing down a too low of an rpm, and I never run the truck down low rpm pulling but now it is quiet. It has the slightest moan in lower gears under light throttle, always did. There were some changes I understand when they went to the larger input shaft, mine is the larger one. I also have it overfilled quite a bit, filled it through the shift tower. It is probably a quart over at least.
That dual mass flywheel has me very concerned. It's a nightmare for the PSD guys that have them. Maybe this unit is better designed. German designed.....

I'm not dissing the NV5600, all makes have problems. Just stating experience with mine. My tranny is being replaced with only 20,000 kms on the clock. I have no idea what went on it but I was having trouble gettin it in second when shifing slow and it had a serious neutral gear rattle. The rest of the gears were fine, including reverse. The syncro mesh's just seemed like they weren't aligning properly. I'd have to double clutch to get it in gear. I sure hope the new tranny will last this time.
I think alot of the slower shifting is the hpcr system keeping the rpm's when letting up upon shifting. the 2nd gen's i have driven definately shifted faster and easier than the 3rd gens. shifting without a clutch was much easier on the previous trucks, i don't even attempt with this truck. The sensor on the go pedal is a pain. Many times in 2nd gear cruising at 1200 rpm and slowly letting off the truck will suddenly drop to 750 and try to throw you through the windshield. I like the easy power and cleaner burning of the hpcr but given a choice i would take a 2nd gen engine in a 3rd gen body, and the rock of the cab when the engine barely turns over and fires is priceless on the 2nd gens. I just changed my tranny oil for the second time last week, this time redline mtl went in. Mostly black stuff on the magnet this time, compared with mostly brass the first 20k.
