nv 4500 to g56

Hello to all the 3rd geners.

Do any of you fine fellers know if the g56 is a potential swapper for a nv4500?
I kinda blew up 3rd gear in my 5 speed the other day and have a line on a totaled 3rd gen with the g56. I was wondering if any of you that might happen to have both models of tranny behind different trucks would mind taking a look to see if bellhousings look the same as well as t case mounts and crossmember. I need to go a six speed and this unit will may be cheaper to pick up than a 5600.

Thank you,

Ben

Does anyone know of a shop that deals with both that I might call to find this answer?

Thank You,

Ben

I think you can swap them out. But honestly, unless you tow quite a bit and need that closer gear spacing and one extra gear, I would rebuild the nv4500.

The 6spds have always felt notchy to me, and are more expenisve to fix later on as well. I loved my nv4500 and if I had gotten a 3rd gen 6spd, id be swapping it it for the nv4500 right now

Sorry I dont have any info for you though, bump so people will see it...

Tranny swap

Quad 4x4 in Roberts Montana can probably tell you if that swap is possible. If you want to check out his web site just google Quad 4x4. His phone number is 406-446-2427.

I do tow quite a bit and hate the big gap between 3rd and 4th otherwise empty 5 gears is plenty. Quad 4x4 is the site I have been looking at quite a bit but I will try giving him a call. I found out last night the tranny I'm after might be out of an 04 which to my knowledge is still the nv 5600. After tear down last night I saw that third gear is a little mangled but the third gear on the countershaft is missing about 6 teeth (OUCH). Thank you guys for your help.

Remembering old post from the first 6sp days - 6sp has bigger input shaft, different clutch disc and plate, longer case and no speedo drive. I gets expensive especially for 4wd! I think Blumanthal sells kits. Craig

The G56 uses a DM flywheel and I don't think the nv4500 does. You may have to replace from the flywheel back as aluded to above.

The plan now looks like they are selling the entire truck as is for about $5 grand. Its an 04 2500 4x4 with everything fine except the sheetmetal is trashed(for 5K)!!!! I don't think the little old lady will be too supportive of me buying a wrecked truck but I found a friend who is interested in the truck minus the tranny so I will just take the flywheel to the t-case. The only disadvantage I see in the g56 over the nv5600 is lower overdrive ratio, but very little of my driving is over 65-70mph.
