Thumbs up No Drone!

I installed my 51" Dondalson (M090544 @ $83 shipped from Fleetproducts.com) yesterday and got rid of my 4" straight through Dynomax and all I can say is WOW! What a difference, it sounds just a little louder than a stock exhuast with a open, tinny/airy, thoatier sound at idle and really sounds mean when you put the go peddly down, it just growls at ya! The Dynomax was obnoxiously loud, almost like one of those ricer fart blasters with a deep note. ,Oh yeah and no drone! My drone sounded like I had some 44" monster mudders on it howling down the road, it would kill me on long trips. I would have a headache from it being so bad. It would have resonance all the time and was really bad in the 70-80 mph range.

My egt's have seemed to drop some also about 50-100 degrees which really suprised me as I expected them to increase slightly since the donaldson had the perferated baffle kind of thing in it instead of being straight through like the dynomax.

Anyway here's my take if you want something a little meaner sounding than stock or something to get your egt's down and keep close to the stock noise level then this is it. If you are trying to rattle the neighbors windows and set off every car alarm you drive by , like my dynomax did, then you will need something else, like my dynomax muffler that I will sell you cheap!

2003 Dodge Ram Quad Cab: 305/555 HO, 48re w/ PML extra capacity pan, AFE stage II, Quadzilla xillerator (100hp), 51" Donaldson, DiProcol guages-Boost, Tans Temp, EGT.

As far as the aero turbine is concerned I have never heard one so I can't compare it. I will try to get someone this weekend to help me get a sound clip of it.

Do you feel like there was any loss of power with the baffle being in the muffler? I'm about to buy the 51" Walker/Nelson/Donaldson (all the same) as well from a local truck shop and just kinda worried about a possible power loss with the baffle...

I have Aero Turbine right now on my truck....I absolutely love the sound and performance, but the drone is killing me when I tow especially after a couple of hours on the road. Thats why I'm ditching it. Its great for daily driving and cruising down the road isnt too bad either...but if you tow a lot, wow, the drone will drive you crazy!

Redracer,
I was worried about the same thing and it sounds like we were in the same droney boat. I seen where people knock or cut out the baffle/crimp but I didn't because I was worried about the noise/drone issue. I didn't notice any loss of power and like I said was worried EGT's might go up with the baffle and instead they have dropped, I can't figure that one but I'll take it.

That was a question I was going to ask, does the cat muffle the sound much? I've been thinking of going to a muffler delete pipe without any other changes, but I'm concerned about the drone. I've been told that the muffler delete pipe with cat only increases the noise by 5-7 decibels - not sure how loud a decibel is, but it doesn't sound like much. If it's too loud, maybe I should look into a Donaldson.

I know the 40" Nelson I put in is straight through (PN in my gallery). The 51" Nelson is as well from what I've read on here. I'm guessing the 40 is a little louder than the 51, if that's the case the 51 must be awful quiet cuz the 40 sounds great IMHO.
There is a Doaldson/Nelson/Walker cross reference around somewhere, I saw it once but can't find it now.

we have identical trucks it appears, so i assume you have no cat??? that is the reason i have not done anything to mine, cause i am afraid of the drone. wifey would not like me if i spent money that gave her headaches

I may try one if there is no drone, i have been itchin to start on some mods.

Right on! There are no cats on the 03's I don't know for sure when they started adding the cat, if it was 04 or 05.

Jezz,
As far as the mods go the wife will probably end up with a headache anyway. Once you start spending money on mods it is hard to stop, as said before it is a slippery slope!

I just have the regular 4040 with no CAT....heh, its loud! Sounds awesome...but the drone...wow!

I got the part number to cross reference the 51" muffler across to Nelson/Donaldson/Walker....heh, just dont have it right in front of me. Its in my notebook at home next to my comp...

I'll be buying the Walker...it sounds like the way to go since its the same as Donaldson!
