Unhappy newbie from WI

Hi guys. I got a 2004 srw 3500. Runs great most of the time but for no reason it will die and I have to coast to the side of the road and stop. I turn it over to start and it cranks and fires for about one second and dies again. This has happened a lot and sometimes takes up to 15 minutes to get running again. No codes and I had it in the shop on a scanner and still nothing. Drove it today and it ran fine............

Do you have any guages? I would take a look at our fuel filter. Change that out first.

Being an '04, its possible that you still have the lift pump by the fuel canister. They are know to go out. You need to make sure that you're getting 10psi from the lift pump to the injector pump (cp3).

Maybe an admin will move this to the proper section so this newbie can get some help.
Severely clogged air/fuel filters have been known to cause these issues in addition to what tesla440 suggested...

I would bet you are loosing the lift pump. Open the fuel filter drain, put a pan under it, and turn the key on.

My bet would be you don't get any fuel flow.

Thumbs up duespayer

Thanks guys. This has been going on for a while. The truck runs fine now. I changed the fuel filter, oil, and cleaned the air filter last month and noticed some improvement in the performance, but still dies for no reason and sometimes it will be OK for a week and the just quit.

I have been to other sites on the web and so far this one beats them all. I have read some of the posts from Madhat and will be voting on Monday.

I don't have any gauges yet but have Juice with attitude the previous owner installed. That monitors the EGT, Boost, and tranny temp. They are all fine..............

I would agree, sounds like your lift pump is on the fringe.

funny, I had this same problem yesterday. Went to start the truck after work and same "runs for a second and dies". Mine started after the 4th try. I have the tank lift pump (OEM replaced under warranty) which might be going out but I haven't heard of any issues with the new in-tank pump. When my original pump died it just died and did not restart.

It would be nice to take a lift pump pressure reading...

I'm wondering if it could be due to the engine immobilizer. I know of motorcycles that had a problem with the antenna ring cracking.

You can spend around 400.00 to 800.00+ If you want the same pump you can get it from www.genosgarage.com For around 180.00 plus shipping.I have a new one under my back seat.also have one at home.I got 2 of them at the time I order.I am still ruining the factory pump that came on it.The only thing that I think has keep this pump going is I put 1oz of out board motor oil in my tank for every gal of fuel. This pump was put on the truck when the fuel was 500PPM now it is 15PPM lost a lot of lub when it went to 15PPM All so Geno's have a good deal on filter kits 4-2-1 I always tell them to make it 4-4-4 I always change all filters when changing oil === GOOD LUCK ==

This is a common problem on the 03-04.5 trucks. The lift pump is mounted on the fuel filter canister, a bad design.

You can get a Raptor 150 or 100 for around 350-ish, and the install is super easy. I would NOT replace the pump with an OEM style canister pump.

There are many more options. If you are leaning toward performance, I'd go with an Air Dog. They are around 499, I think.

I would NOT continue to run the truck with the LP failing. It is not a proven fact, but starving the CP3 can kill it, and you're looking at around 1200 bucks for one of those.

I have done quite a few of these, if you want more info, please shoot me a PM, I'll be happy to answer any questions you have.
