Newbie trans temp sender question

I'm planning to install an autometer trans temp gauge today. I purchased an autometer manifold to put inline in the "hot" line which secures via compression fittings on either side.

My questions are these:

1) Which line is the hot line? (line coming out of the trans more toward the front or more toward the rear of the truck)
2) Where is the best place on the line to cut / attach the manifold?
3) What else should I be aware?

Thank you for your help, and I apologize in advance for what may be a stupid set of questions.
