Newb question

I just picked up my 2006 Mega cab and the dealership said they did an oil change. But I don't believe them the oil is black I only ask becuase I am normally a Gas guy and I don't know how long the oil stays looking fresh in the diesel world any help you could provided would be great.

With the newer diesels, 2004.5 and up, the oil turns black almost as fast as you can pour it in. I change my oil, fire it up to check for leaks and it looks black then. It is possible that the dealership did change the oil. Try to get a good look at the top of the filter to see if you can see any dirt or dirty oil on top of it or down the sides.

Equalizer is right. The oil turns black almost immediately following an oil change. It is normal and does not indicate any problem. The oil is doing it's job, "suspending" the "soot" that is in the oil and not on your engine.

You should consider changing your own oil for the piece of mind that it is done right and with the right type oil/filter. Personally, I change it every 5k which is probably overkill. I use Rotella Synthetic and a Fleetguard LF16035 stratapore filter.

Thank you for the replies. As for changing my own oil the dealership is giving me three years of oil changes should I just turn in those for the cash equivalent?

I do all my own maintenance, but then I never was offered free oil changes. I'm not all that sure I would let the dealer do the changes anyway, because I don't trust dealership techs much. Plus, I run synthetics, and I'll bet the dealer isn't going to put synthetic in for free.

Thumbs up

I too have recently switched my truck over to Amsoil (synthetic) but I have some good friends that have a shop and change it for me. They charge $30 for the change, but I dont have to take the time or the oil to the recycle barrel either. I checked it after I got home and it was already dark. Part of owning a diesel.

Oh and congrats on your new truck!

I have all the tools I think to do an oil change in my garage as long as there is nothing special I need for a diesel except and huge catch can. By the way how much oil do these hold I would look it up in my owners manual but I don't have one yet they ordered one for me at the dealership but it will take like two weeks to get here.
