My buddy just got a 2003 Ram 3500 DRW 2wd truck for car haulin. He says even unloaded he is getting horrible MPG, around 9MPG. I am going to change the fuel filter, air filter, and run a good batch of PS thru his truck this afternoon. Anything else you can think of i need to do? What about plugging my SMARTY in will that put him on the latest ECM flash from Dodge/Cummins?

well it wouldnt hurt to try the smarty. just make sure you downloaded the program for 03-07s. i dont think the smarty will install the current dodge update, even if it did, when you uninstalled it, it would take it out!

if it were me, i would let him drive with the smarty for a week and see if his mpg's improve at all. if he doesnt have a pyrometer, tell him not to tow!

im gonna do the filters right now and let him run with that for a week. he doesnt have a pyrometer and tows a 5 car hauler everyday so we will hold off on the smarty.

 

I believe if you load the smarty, unload it to stock it leaves whatever DC version that is on the smarty behind. That is the way I understood it if that is not correct. You could just let him tow on sw1 and be ok. You didn't say whether auto or manual... if manual, I'm sure sw 3 won't get toasty as long as he keeps the rpms up.

 

wow much is he hauling? fully loaded (22000 lbs) I get the same and have seen most others on these rigs get the same. It takes a lot of energy to haul heavy loads.

 

he has a auto. im sure he is fully loaded if not over loaded. funny thing was he had 2 brand new f-450s on his trailer. New Fords being pulled by a 03 Cummins, gotta love it.

Anyway i changed the air filter and fuel filter. We will see if that helps.
