A new spin on fuel economy?

I have made a habit of talking to other Cummins owners at the fuel pump--always asking them about their fuel economy. Twice, people have told me of taking their trucks to a trusted and experienced diesel mechanic who retimed the pump. Their explanation was that the Cummins diesels are set at the factory to be within specifications, but the specs indicate a range and are not necessarily set exactly. Both of those I talked to told me their mechanics set the pump timing precisely where it should be and resulted in improved power and economy. Anyone with similar experience?

Old trucks, common rail units are electronic fired injector cycles set-ups. The pump just puts out the hi-fuel pressure to the rail.

so to improve milage, you would need to adjust the fuel timing...

No timing with the CP3 electronic pump.
There used to be timing with the vp44, p7100, ve etc.

can you adjust your injector timing? What about fuel pressure adjustments?
If it sounds like Im trying to downrate the engine, its because part of my justification that I need a CTD is that I can get better fuel milage than my Fronty (17 -19) and have a bigger, better truck that will last longer.

The ECM controls the timing of the injectors, not the pump.

The ECM doesn't control pump pressure? I thought one of the enhancement manufacturers mentions boosting fuel pressure to the injectors.
