The buzz is Chev is bumping their numbers so they are no longer on the bottom of the heap. I wonder where it will go and what they will do with their tranny to be able to hold it?

Re:New power number's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wonder who had more input on the HP/TQ increases, the engineers or marketers? Reminds me of the heyday of bigblocks in the late 60's.

But the best news of all, is that HO is available to everyone everywhere.

The new Duramax is rated at 310hp and 565lb ft torque. But it's only available in 2nd-4th gear with the Allison tranny. 1st and 5th is still 300hp.

Re:New power number's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I stole that link, cut and pasted it here, from Turbo Diesel Register. I think it was Yahoo that printed that out. Lemme go look.

http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/031203/dew013_1.html is the yahoo link.

http://www.turbodieselregister.com/f...threadid=87431 is the TDR link.

I searched for it as well and finally found the Yahoo press release, but no other information out there.

Just trying to pass on some information, that's all.

WHAT? ??? ??? How do they do that? How can they have 310 HP in one gear and 300 in another? Sounds more like their old 4-6-8 cylinder engines - - a disaster.

It is an interesting dilemna - - new engine and tranny, all that money invested, and the tranny will not upgrade for more torque.

Hopefully Dodge thought of that with the new 48RE. Dodge was a little vague about whether the auto would be compatible with the EBrake.

Re:New power number's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is simple really, they just reduce fuel, that lowers power.

If I remember right Dodge does the same thing on the autos, reduces fueling while the tranny shifts to take the shock off from it.

Re:Cummins 600 !

Dang, and I just got my 2004 HO not too long ago but anyway I needed the tax write off for this year. I really want to know what they did to improve this over the HO and if they reworked the 48re at all to withstand the additional torque. I want more power but would hate to mess with my warranty.

Randy.

Re:Cummins 600 !

So, what did they do to squeeze more HP and torque out of the engine? Retune it? Change the software? What were those "meaningful changes" that Klegon mentioned? And did I hear something about a new Eaton transmission?

Re:New power number's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gotta love computer controlled devices! These ECMs are capable of lots more than merely being used to control emissions and when transmissions shift, etc...

Re:Cummins 600 !

well, "they" make a lot of 'em. I haven't heard yet, but I may not. When our news letter comes through I will see if they anounce any new applications for the HD trans segment. Hard to keep track of the other divisions....I will let you guys know if I hear anything.

Re:New power number's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's some more news from today's Autotech Daily

NEW DODGE RAM WEIGHS IN WITH POWER

Chrysler Group claims its 2004 Dodge Ram 2500/3500 will have the most torque ever offered in a production heavy-duty pickup—600 lb-ft—when the pickup truck debuts early next year. Powered by the new 5.9-liter inline-six Cummins 600 diesel, the heavy-duty Ram will generate 325 hp. The Cummins engine achieves its peak torque at only 1,600 rpm, a lower speed than either the 6.0-liter PowerStroke diesel used in Ford’s F-Series Super Duty pickup or the 6.6-liter Duramax engine that powers the Chevrolet Silverado. The Ford and Chevy engines are supplied by Navistar and Isuzu, respectively. Previously, the highest output engine offered in the Ram was a 5.9-liter Cummins rated at 305 hp and 555 lb-ft of torque. That powerplant and the 5.7-liter V-8 Hemi will still be available on the new 2004 models. A less powerful option has been dropped. In addition to massive torque, the Cummins 600-powered Ram boasts best-in-class towing capability of 16,400 lbs., which Chrysler notes is 3,000 lbs more than Ford’s F-350 outfitted with a PowerStroke diesel. The Ram’s gross combined weight and gross vehicleweight ratings of 23,000 lbs and 12,000 lbs, respectively, also are purported to be tops in the segment. In addition, the automaker points out the new Dodge is the only heavy-duty diesel pickup pre-equipped for an exhaust brake and requires oil changes only every 15,000 miles half the recommended frequency of its competitors. Other goodies include oversized brakes and class-exclusive side curtain airbags. Chrysler also trumpets the quietness of the engine and the use of premium exhaust valves, high-strength exhaust manifolds, gallery-cooled pistons and an oil-bath turbo. Unlike previous heavy-duty Ram models, trucks equipped with the new Cummins engine will meet California’s latest emissions regulations. Vehicles equipped with a sixspeed manual also are capable of "zero-throttle" launches for a smoother performance under load.
