New guy with some ?'s
New guy with some ?'s
I have owned my truck for about 5 months and this is my first diesel, so I don't know alot about it. I was wondering if someone could tell me what is the silencer ring and where is it at? Also what is the swiss cheese air box?
Right now I'm running a straight pipe w/cat, is it better to have a muffler with no cat or what I have now? Any info is much appreciated.

some guys will drill holes in the bottom of their air box to increase air flow, a couple of two inch holes or so
from what i understand the muffler is the most restrictive part of our exhaust so if you like the noise go for it just like you have it

I am new also man so don't feel lonely. Did removing the muffler make any difference?
I have asked a couple of times where the silencer ring was and if removing it helped, but got no answers.
I haven't done anything to mine yet and don't know if I will. You read alot of stuff on this forum about MaMopar (DC) voiding warranties because of mods.

remove the air intake tubbing from your turbo, if you look into the turbo youll see that there is a snap ring or sorts holding down a bottomless cone shapped piece of metal its used to keep the turbo from whistling as much...there are no gains horsepower wise...as far as removing it goes.....i havent removed mine yet so ill let someone chime in on the removal process, but if you search there will be allsorts of useful tips and tricks
Thanks for the response guy's, I didn't really feel a difference in removing the muffler but the truck weighs over 8,000 lbs so I didn't think I would. It is louder but I like to be herd so it's cool.

Basically from what I have gathered from reading here and other sites is that all the intake and exhaust mods may and a small bit of performance but nothing that can really be noticed in the drivers seat, The main reason for these mods is to increase or free up air flow in and out of the engine when adding programmers, chips, injectors, turbo(s) etc..... If your planning any of these type performance upgrades it will help keep EGT's down as to let you use more of that power you have available. If you are considering swiss cheesing your air box I would recomend spending the small amount of money it is and buy an intake upgrade system. This will allow you to retain the stock stuff so if you sell your truck you can keep the good stuff.
The silencer ring gets mixed opinions, some say it added a little boost, improved air flow who knows? I can tell you that when I removed mine it simply turned the turbo whistle up a few db with no noticeable performance improvements. As for removing the ring it's very simple, remove the intake tube from the air box and the turbo. On the intake of the turbo there is a cone shaped ring that is held in by snap ring of sorts. Use a smaller flat head, grab the edge of the snap ring, pop it out and the cone shaped ring will fall out, reinstall intake tube. 10 mins tops to do. Throw the rings in the door pocket in your truck if you ever want to put it back in.
Tman mentioned the dealer/warranty void issues, This is something that really just depends on the dealership. There is alot of horror stories about dealers on all the forums but you never hear about the dealers that will actually help ya out and not give you grief over every little thing. With the mods listed in my sig I have had my truck back into the dealer 3 times in 50,000 miles and have never pulled anything out or tried to hide anything. I had u joints replaced which imo is something that they could have denied because of mods and did not. I do have a set of bull ***** hanging under the rear of my truck and helps to lighten the atmosphere.

I finally figured it out after looking at the before and after pictures of the removal on the rings, but thanks.
