Just got back from the dealer. My truck was in for oil, tire rotation and that 20 mph whistle. This is the second time for the "whistle". First time last spring( at that time I was told it was most likely "just new". However, this time it's got 18k and every time the temp dips below 50 degrees the truck whistles at 20 mph. The colder it gets. The louder it is.. Service manager asked me to leave the truck over night, so he could hear it first thing in the morning ( ice cold). He took it for a ride and said " man that is loud"... To make a long story short... he ordered me a new drive shaft unit. It should be in next week. I will let you guys know if it worked...

Well you wouldn't know how glad I am to read this...mine has the exact same symptoms, it's loudest at about 15 mph when cold. I thought it was the rear gears. In fact, I took the truck to the dealer today to get the rearend checked while the new door seals were going on. The service man told me it was the turbo making the noise.

Is the noise supposed to disappear after so many miles?

 

I have had the whistle from day one. And now it's starting to whistle at 35 mph. The colder it gets, the worse it becomes. After it warms up, it is not as loud, but you can still faintly hear it. The service manager thinks it might be the bearings between the two piece drive shaft unit. Still crossing my fingers. I will let you guys know when the truck is back in the shop next week.

 

Same thing here. Am I the only one that hars it change pitch when the tranny shifts? Same speed, but when the tranny shifts, the noise changes. Almost right along with engine speed. Deffinitly in the tranny or drive shaft. I thought it was gears at first too.

 

I'm wondering if this is a long wheel base problem.I haven't heard of any short wheel base trucks with this problem.

 

I have the same noise. I had it in the dealer several times last winter and they finally had a tech go for a ride with me. when he heard the noise, he laughed and stated it's "just turbo whine resonating off the exhaust". I pressed him for an explanation as to why there would be turbo whine on both accel and decel and he never answered me.

Well, no noise all summer and now that the temps dropped again, I have the whine back. I've had no other problems other than that annoying noise. mpgs are decent at 16.5 avg and have only gotten better as I approached 40k miles.

My truck is an 03 2500 QC SO LB 47RE 4.10 / anti-spin rear axle.

 

I too have a problem.... Not sure if mine is the "whistle" ???
Mine is between 10~25 mph and sounds like an owl underneath the truck. It's **** funny if it wasn't so irritating. At first it sounded like it came from the glove box area, but as temps went down it now sounds like it's just behind the cab of the truck. I was thinking it might be vacuum in the fuel tank and vent problems..... still not sure. But it's getting pretty darn loud inside and it's gotta sound funny standing at the curb.

I have it too and am taking it in for it this week. Glad I saw this post. Would like to know if the driveline replacement was the fix. I suspected that it might be the carrier bearing. I think that this confirms it. Mine is a long box.

 

I have the whistle or "hooty owl" also. Had it since new.
