New Dodge Motor

A guy that I know goes to the cummins plant down in columbus on a frequent basis. He was there about a month ago and he seen two things. First they had 2 industrial size dumpsters full of blocks that were milled wrong. Second, he was talking to them and they said if the EPA and emissions don't let up there going to have to change to a different motor. Does anyone have any info on this? Just curious

Thanks
Richard

yes I have heard that the emmisions on the diesels have been killer for cummins. They have been unable to make the grade sort of say. For the last 3 years? they have just paid the fine for not have an engine that will pass the emmisions regulations. As far as I know they are the only manufacturer that has this problem.

Ouch!! That had to hurt. As a CNC Machinist I know how easaly something like that can happen but it is never a pleasent experiance. I cant imagine running that manny parts without caching the problem but I guess anything is posible. I bet someone got there butt chewed over that one.

Yeah there were 182 blocks!!! Dana/Perfect Circle used to do there main machining and then they would finish it at Cummins, but Dana/Perfect Circle does not have a plant in Richmond, IN any longer so I don't know the situation there. Yeah with Columbus and Cummins being only about 1hr and 30 mintues away, its kinda nice to know what is going on to some extent!!!!

Wait a minute.... I thought the new engines (600-610 and others I might add) are some of the cleanest burning diesels out there...??? Am I wrong?

your information you heard doesnt sound right . Cummins engines have been the leader so far in being the cleanest and least amount of problems in the heavy duty market, Cat and Detroit are just getting it under control, the new engines will be coming out for the 07.... right now the only engine using the clean air credit on the Cummins side is the ISL which does not have a EGR set up yet.

I agree with JohnCA58. The Cummins is 50 state legal and without an EGR. I just had my emissions smoke test completed for NY inspection and the emissions opacity was negligable. Seems Cummins is leading the pack according to the diesel shop that did my tests.

Yeah, we need some facts to justify that.

Cummins has the lowest warranty for emissions compliant engines, but we aren't "cutting it".

How has the emissions standards been harder on Cummins than any of the other OEM's?

Different engine? How would it be different? It'd still be an inliine 6 no matter what.

I was just told this by a gentleman that goes there often. I was just curious to see if theres any truth to it? He says "They tell me this, But I'm curious to see what will actually develop out of it". Now the blocks being bored wrong is a little more justifyable!!! I guess

Towing at 6 MPG tells me Cummins has problems with emissions/drivability.

In an episode of Two Guys Garage last year, they toured the CMEP (Cummins Mid-Engine Plant). The guy giving the tour explained that the castings and rough machining are done for Cummins in Brazil, then the blocks are shipped up. He said that if they find anything wrong (or wrong enough that they can't correct it with final maching), they toss the block.

Yet another "benefit" of off-shoring...

What about the low sulfur fuel that's going to be mandatory by 07? Isn't that going to help the emissions issue?

Cummins 600 and up Diesels meet all EPA standards that are in effect. The article about them being fined are for Diesels that have been made in prior years which they want to be legal in California and want the manufactures of those engines to foot the bill. Even then I dont think they are talking about 2500-3500 series trucks but rather larger rigs from state trucks to 18 wheelers.

http://www.detnews.com/2005/autosins...tos-166806.htm

thats like telling everyone with a pre cat converter car they have to have one installed and the car companies will foot the bill. NOT GONNA HAPPEN.

If you have a Cummins 600 or higher no fear! you are good to go.
