Question New diesel smokes in the morning???

My new 2004.5 CTD puffs smoke on startup in the morning.

The engine is cold but only as cold as summer temps will allow.

I just started it up and it blew a big puff of smoke.

Is this normal for a CTD with 1150 miles on it?

Thanks,

DT.

is it white smoke?? If so i have had the same problem and it has been in the shop for over a week. They think it is a bad injector leaking fuel with the engine is off, it's not holding fuel pressure. There for they are testing one injector a day and this is pissing me off. my truck only has 3,000 miles on it as far as i am concerned they should replace all of them. arn't the stock injectors like $75 each?

Blackdevil. The injectors are FAR FAR more than $75 each. Last I knew they where around $650 +- each. There is a reflash to fix the white smoke at start up. I had it done to mine and now it is worse. It used to only do it if it sat for several days now it does it all the time. When you get it back try leaving it sit as long as you can tolerate (several days) Then start it and see what it does. Mine will smoke a cloud that a 1st gen would be gelouse of. It will also miss like mad for a few seconds. I agree its got to be an injector leaking down but I cant convinse my service manager of it.

Dieselnewbie- Sory cant help with the dark/black smoke. That sounds like it is sooted up from long idle times and/or short trips to me.

Mine does it. I believe it is normal for these trucks. I get a nice puff in the morning or if it sits a while. I can also get it to blow pretty good while accelerating if I want it to. This truck smokes much more than my 96 did.

I called the dealer and he said it was normal.

He said that diesel fuel, being much less refined than gas, will blow smoke when you start it up.

So it isn't oil (which I first thought it was), it's the diesel fuel.

I do sit in traffic for long periods during my daily commute. The kind of traffic that moves about 50 to 100 feet every 30 seconds or so. The tach revs from idle to about 1500-1800 every 30 seconds so I don't think the smoke is caused from long idleing times.

Also, the wife told me it's more of a light gray color (she's seen it when I leave in the AM).

I'm not worried about it now.

BTW, after 1150 miles I'm now averaging 17.5 miles per gallon.

I've seen a steady improvment since I picked it up new.

The mileage includes commuting in heavy traffic 5 days a week!

It's a 2004.5 2500 quad cab with 4WD.

Thanks for the responses!

DT.

FWIW, I have seen virtually no smoke on startup. I picked up this truck on 3/31, and it has seen a few cold, but not bitter, mornings, and, of course, hot weather. There is some soot on the white bumper, but I have never seen "puffs" of smoke, white, black or otherwise.

Truck is a Jan 04 engine build, and has not had the reflash for the stumble/smoke issue that some of the early builds had.

How did they test your injectors? they are going through mine one at a time and it takes 8hrs to test one injector. I can't wait till i get my truck back so i can install my chip.

It must be a '600' thing. I get no smoke on startup, and no visible smoke at full throttle..

They just did a power drop test. I dont think it is a very acurate way of testing injectors and it in no way checks for leak down. They just did the bare minimum to say they looked at it and dident find anything. It sounds as if they are pulling your injectors and bench testing them if it takes 8 hours each. That is a far better method of testing.

your average dealer , and most pump shop do not have the capablility to bench test the CR injectors . I dont understand either what they are doing with the injectors other than wasting your time.

I've never owned a 24v, but my 1st and 2nd gen 12v trucks puff a good amount of smoke on startup... it's more pronounced when the muffler is removed!

also, the warmer the truck/engine is, the less smoke... the first start of the day is the blackest. if I pull off the highway, kill the truck, and fire it back up within 5-10 minutes, there's no smoke at all.

the white smoke on mine was due to a leaky #3 injector, maybe you should have your dealer look at your injectors.

Have you seen any milage increase from the new injector? I have a good fealing that I have a bad one I just cant get it threw the thick skull of the servise manager. Pluss the tick just yells BAD INJECTOR. It sounds exactly like a injector firing only 10 times louder than the rest.
