Aluminum wheels cracking.<br><br> <br><br>June 8, 2003<br><br>Dodge Has Recalled the 2003 2500, 3500 Trucks<br>- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has released the following information.<br><br><br>Make : DODGE Model : 2500 Year : 2003 <br><br>Make : DODGE Model : 3500 Year : 2003 <br><br>NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number : 03V212000 <br><br>Component: WHEELS:CENTER SECTION <br><br>Potential Number Of Units Affected : 1086 <br><br>Summary: <br>CERTAIN HEAVY DUTY PICKUP TRUCKS, THE ALUMINUM WHEELS MAY HAVE EXCESSIVE POROSITY IN THE CENTER HUB AREA WHICH CAN CAUSE A WHEEL TO CRACK. <br><br>Consequence: <br>THIS COULD CAUSE A LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL AND RESULT IN A CRASH WITHOUT WARNING. <br><br>Remedy: <br>DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE WHEELS AND REPLACE THEM IF NECESSARY. I assume these aluminum wheels are an upgrade? ??? Mine are plastic on the outsite, don't know what is underneath? ??? ???

Tell that to all the ton/mile OTR trucks out there...they all have aluminum rims.

 

That was rather tongue in cheek but I have had several vehicles with aluminum rims and while I have had no structural problems with them, the winter salt in this area play havoc with the finish on all of them after a few years. No matter how often I wash them. That is why I prefer steel. Aluminum looks great when they are new and on vehicles that see little salt on the roads. At least I can sand and paint the steel rims.
