my first towing experience

Well a few of us took a trip to the smokey mountains from virginia beach. I towed my boss's toy hauler. It is a 27' and with 3 bikes in the back and fully loaded it was probably about 9k lbs. Add 3 of us in the cab and our bags probably 10k extra weight. I had smarty set to setting 3 stock tourque management. I constantly watched my egt's. I had no worries until i got past richmond, va on 64 west. There was a big mountain and i was trying to maintain a speed of at least 65 to 70. Well for a second i stopped watching the egt's and looked back and it was pegged out at 1500. I quickly let of the cruise control and dropped down to 50 mph. It cooled down but even trying to maintain that speed i had high egt's. I pulled over and downed smarty to setting 1. After that i had much easier time managing the egt's. I could still get it up to 1400 on steep climbs at 70mph. The rest of the trip was fine. I think if i had it stock it would still get hot but not that hot. Tell me if im wrong but i still climbed the hills for about 2 minutes maintaining 1300 or so egt's. After the crest i let it cool to 600 or so for a while. Truck has 6k miles on it now and it definetly feels broke in more. She is getting better mpg and seems a bit tourqier if thats a word.

which version do you have? the new one or the one from dec? my egts are awesome with my dec version, but ive heard that the newer version runs a little warmer! i can pull my boat which is probably around 7-8 full of fuel, coolers, water, etc 90 mph up some good hills and it hasnt ever gotten that hot. i also have a boost fooler though...i run on 5 too

You should be ok. I have hit 1600 before towing my trailer. I wasn't paying attention and looked over ! So I backed out of it and cooler her off. You should have another 4-5k before she is seated really good. I just got my best tank at 22.5 mpg hand calculated with the smarty on #7. Cranked her up to #9 and OMG!!! Fuel miledge went down so I am goon a go back to #7.

oh ya forgot to add the guy who owns the camper owns a powerstroke dually. He was giving me crap because of my egt's. He said he has all stock and just pulls just fine, never worries about egt's and does same speeds up same hills. I guess smarty isnt meant for towing per se.

i think thats a classic case of a powerstroke owner running his mouth to compensate for their motors shortcummins!! lol. does he have a pyrometer in his truck? and the in my experience the smarty has been great for towing and im almost positive im not the only one that think this way. give it some time for you to get dialed in with it

well he told me he doesnt like to change things from stock because he doesnt hot rod around. whatever, its like talking to a wall. I can tell you with my setup, i couldnt maintain 70mph up those hills with that camper without getting over 1400 degrees egt, unless i was at setting 1 or stock. Especially with cruise control. If i take over and vary the throttle than i can control it better.
