I'm doing the work myself and I am replacing everything from the cat back. Parts are extension pipe, muffler, tailpipe and clamps and run just over $500.

Still can believe how quickly these parts rusted out, yea we do have pretty heavily salted roads here in the winter but I've never had a vehicles exhaust system crap out so fast. Oh well.

I'd definately look into an aftermarket cat-back exhaust system for that kind of money. The stock muffler is very restrictive. Just my opinion.

Someone on this forum dynoed 800 something rwhp with the stock muffler, then went strait pipe and only gained 10 rwhp. Stock muffler sounds pretty free flowing to me.

I'm sure there are alot of stock mufflers laying around in the back of muffler shops that can be had for free, or really cheap.

You can order it online or pick it up at any truck parts place. You can buy it and have it installed for under 150 bucks!!

I never said anything about gaining power. I said it was restrictive - meaning does not easily support airflow - causing less heat dissipation - AKA - high EGTs.
I don't doubt for a second that it only caused a 10hp increase - surprised actually. I would rather see what the exhaust temp difference was with and without the muffler. May not have even been a huge difference in temps on the dyno but try comparing stock muffler vs. straight pipe or aftermarket free-flowing while towing 15k up a 2-mile hill. That's where the difference will be. More power comes from more fuel... Freeing up the exhaust and intake will not necessarily add power themselves. But it allows you to increase fueling while maintaining enough airflow to keep temps at a safe level. Seems to be a general misconception in the diesel performance world that exhaust and intakes add bolt-on power. I haven't seen that myself - i talk to alot of people that seem disappointed that they don't have more power after exhaust and intake upgrades. Sorry for the long rambling... just my take.

Muffler

Well if you wanna save some cash, i believe i still have the muffler and tail pipe sitting in my back yard??? It's from an 05 long bed, but should work for a short bed to (believe the front pipe is what was short/long) I'll have to check (not at home) but if you want pm me, and on Thursday I'll let you know if I still have everything (pretty sure I do) I'm in RI so if you don't mind a little drive, it's yours for the taking (not 600 dollars)

I can't see how they rotted out so fast unless something was wrong with them from the factory, or your truck is majorly neglected washing wise, I live in Canada were the roads are salted ALL the time and my muffler after 67k and 4 winters had nothing more then surface rust. Because if it happened once it could just as easily rot out again depending on what caused it.

Thanks all for the replies and offers. As I said before, the only reason I went with the stock setup again is for warranty issues down the road. If not for that, I would have gone aftermarket. Still don't know why it failed so soon, truck is well taken care of, but it did and theres nothing I can do about it but replace it.

Thanks Again,
