MPGs with 285/75/17 Toyo ATs??

I want new tires. The stockers are wearing like iron but I want the looks and weight rating of the Toyo ATs in size 285/75/17. But, like everyone else, I'm feeling the impact of $4 per gallon.

On one hand I think the taller size will improve MPGs a bit on the highway by dropping RPMs at a given speed. On the other, I know the more aggressive and wider tread will lower MPGs.

So, for those of you that have these tires (or similiar size) how did they impact your MPGs?

I'm in the same boat you are. Those are the tires I want whenever the stockers wear out - IF they ever wear out. I have 57K now and they probably have 5 to 10K left on them.

The nice thing about our trucks is they're old enough to get the speedo recalibrated for correct mph and odometer.

I too am curious about the mileage differences.

With mine I just about broke even-I have the 4.10 rear end and with the 235/80 stock cheerios I was getting around 14mpg in town, now I average about the same. I figure the weight of the tire/wheel combo pretty much offsets any gain I get from bigger tires, but I like the aggressiveness, ride, and looks much better, and they are wearing great.

I'm looking for some too but my stockers are brand new. I just can't wait that long to make the swap... I don't think the fuel mileage will change much running those. You may get a bit better mileage on the highway but it won't be anything spectacular.....

On my 04 I switched from the stock 265 Michelins to 285 BFG ATs and it did not affect my hand calculated mileage at all. The truck was geared 3.73. My best guess is that the mileage increased on the highway and decreased around town and it just offset itself. 19-20mpg with either set of tires. Of course, YMMV.

I wondered the same thing.. I just put on a set of 285/75/17 Toyo's yesterday.. Haven't burned through any full tanks yet. As much as it cost to fill up, I'm in no hurry. I have noticed a drop in RPM's by about 150-200 at 55mph.. Time will tell.

The 285/75'a are a fairly HEAVY tire... 67lbs vs 48lbs for stockers..... I went with the 285/70's for 21 fewer rev/mile, increased load (3750 vs 3195) and only 5lbs heavier per tire.... I would guess the heavyness of the 285/75's will have an effect on mileage, thou I am not sure if its enough to negate the gain from 43 rev/mile less.

Thanks for all the replies. Keep them coming.

I know there has to be some more people that actually have this tire that can give some numbers. Come on, don't be shy.

I would also be interested in real world numbers with the 285/70/17 tires. Especially, the Toyo ATs but other brands should give some indication too.

I installed a set of 285/70/17 Toyo ATs back in October. Haven't seen a really noticeable change in fuel economy in either direction. Less than a .5mpg variation.

Still on my 1st tank, but so far the O/H is about normal.. even up a little... my speedo has been re calibrated.

I just want 285s because they will make my new truck look better. If mileage goes up then that will just be a bonus....

I've got the 285/75/17 E on my '04 and really like them. Don't expect better mileage than with the stock 265s but maybe. All highway could be better and all city could be worse. You will notice the higher gearing though. I went from 265s to 315s to 285/70 BFGs, to these 285/75s and I like these the best of all. Good mileage, good steering, tall gearing and very heavy duty. Definately better mileage then the 315s and a bit better than the 285/70 BFG.

The Toyo 285/75E are heavy as mentioned and they are MUCH stiffer in the sidewall than the Toyo 285/70E. They also run very smooth on the highway. Excellent for heavy loads. I'm planning on staying with this size and load range after my experience with the other three sizes.

I've got the Nitto clone to the Open Countrys in 285/70/17.

I took the stock Michelins off at less than 1000 miles and put them on my wifes Tahoe. The first few tanks (stock tires) were averaging about 19-20 at 60mph. Now I've got 15,000 on the truck so its a tad more broken in,and with the 285s I'm still averaging about 19-20 at 60mph.

From the time I switched tires the mpg has been pretty darn close to the same. I can't see much difference in my calculations.

When I was looking at them thats the first thing I noticed, a lot of 35inch tall tires dont way that much. Heavy tires kill mpgs or at least did on my old gasser
