MPG is Horrible, Why?

Hey guys ive been getting about 400 miles a tank, most of it is city driving but still seems very low 2 me? Dos anyone knows why this is? Do I need more mods or is there something I need 2 do, or what? I just changes my oil cleaned my air filter and changed my tranny fluid and still get around 400 miles in city driving? Dos this sound right or is there something wrong or did I do something wrong? Thanks 4 the help.

You need to hand calculte your mileage. I get the same roughly as you and it = 14.5mpg. Do you have a short bed or long bed? 2 diff fuel tank amounts.

Fuel mileage varies truck to truck and driver to driver. Also stop and go with hills is what kills mine.

And nitrous mixed with a Hot Juice has a tendency to kill your mileage too.

WOW this is a loaded question! There are a ton of factors involved in city mpg. Tire size, rear gear ratio, 6-speed or auto, altitude, air temperature, fuel grade, additives... That is for the mechanical and uncontrollable issues. The other factors are how you drive, how much time you spend at stop lights, do you drive uphill more than down... <---- More questions than answers huh.

I will tell you what I have found out. My '03 HO, automatic, long box 4x4 is in stock configuration except for air intake and 85hp fuel box. I run a fuel additive in every tank of fuel. I started watching my city mileage about a year ago. I started with 14.xx mpg I was able to increase it to 15.5 to 17 mpg since then. I don't idle the truck after I start it. I basically start it wait 20-30 seconds and drive it. I turn the OD off when I drive 40 mph or less. I leave it on when I drive 41mph and up. Running more rpm at slower speed increased my mileage about 1mpg. That is the only secret I found. I recently moved to a new house in the same town. It is 2 miles further to work. The change in route has increased my fuel mileage. I drive for a longer period without stops and have 3-5 stops less than the previous route depending on stop lights. There was one tank of fuel that I got 18mpg in town. I was going to work earlier and had 1 stop total. I did no other driving except to and from work on that same route. THAT is how sensitive in town mileage is. One stop more per day every day has a big effect on mileage.

I would say 14-17 is normal if you don't drive foot on the floor all the time. The only way to tell if your mods are netting acceptable mpg is highway mileage. City mpg is subject to too many variables.
