Mpg help

I've got 32,000 on my 05 and continously get from 13-14 mpg (hand calculated) 16-17 (overhead computer) driving both city and highway. Why are my numbers so low? My driving habits don't seem to effect the mileage... My truck blows alot of black smoke on WOT, even before I straight-piped it. I've talked to the dealer techs and they say that it is normal. I've never seen another stock truck blow as much smoke is mine. Any thoughts?

In the real world, doesn't sound to far off on the mileage. Comparing mileage with the other 5 guys at work, all of us owning the same truck, we get about 15-16 with about 90% city driving. If I stomp on the go pedal, mine will billow lots of black smoke as well.

So then my 13 mpg is normal? What about all these guys claiming 18-20 mpg? I'd almost be happy with 15-16, which is closer to what my overhead says. The smoke I really don't mind (Theres nothing like smokin-out the jerk in the "race-car" next to you sometimes), I thought it might have took part in my poor fuel economy though.

My mpg has not changed since I've bought the vehichle 5 months ago regardless of weather. The only time I had a good mpg is when I drove to Laughlin I got like 16 Mpg.

I think the smoke might have something to do with the cat, when i bought my 06 i drove to florida on cruise at 70 the whole way, stoped at a stop light in florida, and just mashed on it and when i did i smoked out the hole intersection, stop at the next one and nothin. Drove another 100 or so miles and it did it again. But since i have misplaced my cat and my muffler it doesnt do it anymore.

I'll look into that... By the way I noticed in your sig that you removed the silencer ring, I was trying to get some more info on that.

I cut out the muffler but not the cat, I wanted it gone and wanted the pipe to turn out right before the rear wheel, but, I was told that I'd loose out on my low end.

Try an Edge Ez or a Quad zxt they will help improve fuel mileage. Also an air box helps out right away for mpg. Guys claiming higher mileage have mods done to their trucks. You can get better but you will have to spend about 500-600 to do it

The quad was recomended by the local Diesel Performance Shop, but they said it was only like a 65 horse unit for around $300. To me me 2 mpg isnt worth $300 if I'm only getting 65 ponies out of it. I guess in the long run it would pay for itself though. What do you think is the best bang for it's buck as far as intakes and programmers

I get 15 mpg in town, with a long box. I think mpg will vary based on weather, weight of the truck (long box being heavier), rear end gears (I have 4.10), etc.

I disagree - IF the quad gave you 2 mpg it would definately be worth it. If you drive 20,000 miles per year and your milage improves from 14 mpg to 16 mpg, then the Quad Box would pay for itself in less than 7 months (assuming diesel to be at $3.00 per gallon).

If I were conviced that the Quad (or any programmer) would give me 2 mpg, for $300 I would buy it in a heartbeat even if it had no Hp gain.

sickandtwisted, you need to use to small screw drivers and GENTLY pry (i believe its a snap ring) out to get to the silencer ring which will just fallout. It does nothing for performance, just louder. I have got my AFE stage 2 yet though. So on a stock box I can barely hear it. Do a search if youd like more info. - Chris
