mileage issue (305/555)
i see alot of people around talking about getting 20+ mpg, although i have never been able to get over LOW 19's (19.2 is the highest on the overhead). for example...this past sunday night i left for a school in jackson, ms. the 1st 150 miles were on 2 lane roads averaging speeds between 65-70, and pretty much babying the throttle (just to see the best mileage i could get), and the overhead said 19.2. the next 60 miles were interstate where i stayed at 80-85mph, and by the time i pulled into the hotel the mileage had dropped to 17.8. does this sound normal?? i'm happy with the mileage compared to the 12-13 in my old gasser, but i hear of others w/ better mileage (call it fuel envy i guess
)

That sounds about what I'm getting. On a flat highway with the cruise at 60, the overhead averages around 22. When I start going faster the mileage drops from there to what your numbers show. Incidently, I noticed a 2-3 mpg drop recently. Changed the fuel filter (which only had 3500 miles on it) and my mileage went back to normal! Must have been some bad fuel

12k miles, and also remember i'm 4x2 compared to ya'lls 4x4!! if ya'll think it's normal, then i'll shut up!! i don't think i have the self control to hold it at 60mph for a sustained amount of time!!

The best I have ever done was 19 and change on the highway. I was getting 16 around town. i have resently noticed a drop in the milage though, someone suggested the fuel filter might need to be changed. I'm going to give it a try this weekend when I do the oil. I have 11,500 on it now and the fuel filter has never been done, I guess its time.

Lsufan78,
Your mileage sounds about right to me.
I make the same trip over and over, about 110 miles. About 70 miles of highway, 30 miles of two lane, and 10 miles of city. With 315's and the auto I average about 17.3 if I drive 75 on the highway and about 16.8 if I drive 80-85.
On other slower trips I have gotten over 21, but it's rare and only if I go slow.
Some have said higher gearing is the answer to better mileage, but it's not RPM, within the narrow range we're talking about. I think speed is the biggest enemy of mileage. Of course fast starts around town are the worst thing, but wind resistance really increases with speed. Putting the 315's on raised my gearing about 10% and the mileage dropped about 1- 1 1/2mpg. Wind resistance.
I've seen it over and over with different vehicles, if mileage is the most importrant thing, we have to slow down. It's also hard to compare with others, every situation is different.

I get 12 around town, 45mph or less with lots of lights, real city driving.
I usaully get around 18-24 on the highway.
I usually get 10.5-12.5 towing my 5VR.
I try to keep the rpms down around 18-19k to get the best mileage

About 21mpg (US gal), 26mpg (CDN Gal) @ 110km/h (68mph) on a flat highway, cruise control set, no headwind. If I increase the speed by 10 km/h (6mph), fuel mileage drops by 2-3 mpg. On a recent trip to Minneapolis ), I drove 130 km/h (80 mp/h) into strong winds and ran the tank to almost empty after 800 km's (500 miles. I had started with the tank filled to the top of the neck and refilled it the same. total fuel used was 31 US Gal = 16 mpg.
On the way back, I towed a 25.5' - 2 horse gooseneck with living quarters (approx 5,000#) into a strong headwind (35mp/h) at 65 mph and got 15 mpg.
What I have learned through all of this is: My Dodge gets great fuel mileage if I drive it a 60 - 65 mp/h. Once I start cruising above this speed, the mileage drops off quickly.

I got perturbed with the 14 I kept seeing on the display around town. I took a stroll down a long road, reset the thing and drove light pedal at around 60-65. Mileage steadily climbed up to 19, but I got out farther than I wanted to go. The lights on the road knocked it back down but she held 17+ for the way back being a little more aggressive.
