Mega Cab 2500 or 3500?

Hey Guys,

I'm looking at getting a new truck here soon. I was wanting to get the 3500 but their seems to be a shortage of Laramies in the state right now. I'm currently waiting for a 2500 laramie to show up.

My question is am I right in thinking the only differance in the 2500 and 3500 is the Springs? Or is there any other differences between the two.

Thanks guys,

--Rich

3500-9900lbs
towing capacity 13850lbs-15900lbs

and the 456 gear ratio is ava. in the 2500 not the 3500. same rear axle 1150 stiffer springs ect....

Hard choice to make. You could go ahead and buy the 2500 and install bags in the back or wait for a 3500.

Get the 3500 as you will need the payload.

New guy, if you went on Dodge's website you got some very confusing info. The towing capacity numbers you have include the hemi engine. Also, the 4.56 gear ratio is for Power Wagon Hemi Powered 2500's.

The Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) for all of the Cummins Powered Rams (2500, Single Rear Wheel 3500, and Dually 3500) is the same. It is 21,000lbs with the 3.73 gear and 23,000lbs with the 4.10s. That is total legal weight of truck and trailer and cargo.

The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) is 9000lbs on 2500 and 9900lbs on the Single Rear Wheel 3500. Duallys are 12,300 I believe. This is the weight of the truck and it's cargo only.

The primary difference between the 2500 and Single Rear Wheel 3500 is a set of overload springs in the rear. Otherwise, they are mechanically the same. Same axles. Same regular spring pack. Same tires. The 3500's I believe come standard with cab clearance lights and it's optional on the 2500.

Personally, I don't know why anybody wouldn't want to go ahead and get the SRW 3500 if they are considering the 2500. The cost difference , at least when I bought mine, was very little. The extra 900lbs of GVWR is worth it.

Is it true that the 3500's are 1" higher than the 2500's? Just heard from some one.

As far as I know, they are identical in height. Mechanically, they are the same in every way, except the SRW 3500 has overload springs in the back that don't effect the height. The overloads do nothing until the truck has such a heavy load that they come into play.

I believe that on Ferds.....the SRW F350 may sit slightly higher than the F250.

I think you done good...

..getting the 3500. I was reading MotorTrend the other day, "Truck of the Year" Issue for which the MC was a contender. Imagine my dismay when I realized the Honda Ridgeline has as much advertised payload capacity (roughly 1500 lbs.) as the 2500 MC! Now that's embarassing.

Of course, we all know the Dodge can handle way more than that in reality.

My insurance from my Quad 2500 to my MC 3500 stayed the same. There should be no differance from 1ton to 3/4 ton ratings in insurance cost.

Will a '06 Cummins 2500 pull a 15k 5'er?

I'm reading all the posts and it looks like my new 2006 Mega Cab CTD 2500 4x4 can only tow about 12,000? My Dodge dealer tells me I can tow a 12,400 TT or a 15,700 5'er. Said the hitch on the TT should be no more than 1,200 lbs but did not say what the 5'er hitch max is. I bet my Ram can pull 15,700 specially if I add the exhaust brakes and Edge controller I'm thinking about, but am I legal? Dodge website only says when properly equiped. Whats the max I can tow and the 5'er hitch max for my 2500? By the way, I'm thinking of getting a Forest River Cherokee Wolf Pack TH?
