Question MB G56 6-speed?

Does anyone know if the G56 6-speed trannys that Dodge has been putting in their trucks since the 05' model year are made by Mercedes Benz? I was just looking at the Sterling Bullet truck website and they advertise that their G56 is made by MB. Just curious.

Yep, it is. Believe it's made in a Daimler plant down in Brazil.

I had heard once it was a Getrag design made through MB, is that correct or not?

As far as I know its straight MB, no Getrag in it at all.

I think a LOT of the whole Getrag confusion comes from the "G" in G56. I've met more people than you can imagine that thinks its a Getrag.

Come to think of it I've met plenty of people that believe Ford owns Cummins (or Cummings), the Duramax is built by International... etc.

No, it isn't a Getrag.... at least not since Ford sold CumminGs.

MB has been mass producing the G56 down in Brazil at least the last several years for medium duty trucks.

As few people already mentioned, it is definitely not a Getrag. It is manufactured in Brazil by MB for medium duty trucks.

Considering MB builds vehicles and not transmissions that statement not be completely true. Getrag builds a lot of transmissions for MB and at one time did build the G56 plus supplies components for it. Probably still builds the units for certain applications in Europe.

The G56 has always been considered an MB design but if you dig a little deeper into the relationships you will find that Getrag has a long standing design and production relationship with MB. It a pretty good assumption Getrag had more than a peripheral hand in the design process. They have the expertise after all.

The current facility in Brazil is a cooperative effort between several international transmission and component builders with investments from Daimler AG and others. Since the prodcution rate is much higher and the costs cheaper it only made sense to source as many of the units from the Brazilian plant as possible.

Soo, is it a Getrag or is it not a Getrag? Not so cut and dried answer, and, for the most part a moot point. Unless we run out of OTHER arguing points.

Not for high horsepower applications as I discovered.

Has a MB badge on the side.

Unruly, how much HP/TQ do you think it can handle. No drag racing or sledpulling, just pulling and playing around a little.

I would guess once you get around 550hp to 600hp if you behave, you are bordering on the edge of destruction. Keegan went from 571hp to into the mid to upper 600hp range and it lasted only weeks. I know of several other guys who have had multiple failures and they are over the 600hp range as well. Have seen posts where stock trucks had them fail. Seems like a lot of people loose 3 or 4th gears.
