manual or auto
Hey all I just had a quick question about the five and six speed vs the auto trannys in the new models. I will be trading up my 01 for a new cummins in a month or so. Not sure on what tranny to go with. I plan to bomb this truck so I was wondering what tranny will hold up better. I am leaning towards the six speed but i am not to familiar with the pros and cons that come along with it. Any imput on any of the transmissions would help.

if you really plan on bombing the truck then the 6 sp. is the way to go. i've had them both and i personally like the auto better but i don't plan on bombing my truck. it is nice being able to have a drink in your hand and not worry about shifting. but then again... i'm pretty lazy.

I bought the truck in my sig last month. The only time I've regretted getting the 6 speed is pulling out into a busy street from a stop, with traffic going 45+ and having to row. I haven't done this yet, but I think from now on, I'll idle it up and start off in 2nd, then bring it up high enough to skip 3rd. Other than that, I enjoy the rowing. My wife hates the new Cummins, and that's the main reason. I'm not going to win any 0-60 races with it either. The 5 speed has been discontinued.
As far as bombing, the NV has quite a reputation of durability, but unless you find one in an 05, you'll be getting the G56 if you go with the 6 speed. Nobody knows how strong it is. Do a search for "dual mass flywheel" and you'll see some unflattering posts about it. You can put your $$ into upgrading the 48RE, but as you probably know, it won't be cheap. More than beefing up the clutch if you get a stick.
PM me when you're ready to buy. A friend of mine is now working for a dealer in CT, just pass Mohegan Sun. A bit of a drive for you, but it might be worth it.

I like the NV5600 (except that horrendous 4-5 shift-miss!) and it is great unless you are in traffic, which I am a lot in the DC area. I'm thinking about getting the B&M short shift kit to allow a little bit faster shifting, and it supposedly eliminates the 4-5 miss problem. Anyone know how?

Maybe I am getting lazy but I like auto and the last standard I tore up cost me more than any of the automatics to fix. More power to the wheeles in the standard is nice when going down the road but in tite spots backing and towing nothing beats the auto. I have tore up every transmision in every truck I have owened except a Ford with a 3 on the tree when I was 16 17 and of all of them that one got beat that on the worst. I think Dodge has this 48re built better than the last transmissions but only time will tell , they allmost had to with the 7 ,70 it was costing them profit.
B&M short shift kit
Hey guys been busy the last couple of days so i couldnt check in. Just to update you all I have found a 05 w/6 speed 4x4 short bed four door. Shes got 3,000 miles on her and shes a white beauty. Dealer only wants 35,000 for the truck so I think im gonna jump on this one. By the way thank you all for your imput I was leaning towards the six speed and it sounds like the way to go. I deffinately dont mind rowing through the gears as I have owned many a standard before. This truck sounds like a great deal to me, cant wait to bring her on a test drive.
