Hey all, I just bought a 2006 3500 cummins. Its twin turbocharged, fass fuel system, all the supporting modifications, the whole 9. Basically my questions are(as a first time diesel owner) is there anything I should know maintenance wise? I always changed my hemi's oil and did most routine maintenance myself and was hoping to do this myself too. Any recommendations for oil and filters to use? How often should I change the fuel filters, and anything else i should routinely check/change?

 

As for changing your oil, many have installed a drain valve in place of the drain plug to make draining easier and MUCH cleaner. I have this drain valve, and this nipple. I put a rubber plug over the nipple after draining the oil and closing the valve as this keeps road dirt out of the nipple (I send a sample to a lab to see how my oil and engine is doing, need a clean sample).

As for which oil, 20 people will have their "Best" oil. I've used Delo and Royal Purple. Lab results don't show much of a difference. I don't remember the frequency of changes for oil and fuel filters on my '03, so can't help you there. Geno's has filter packages at a good price.
