Question Lubricating the Front Drive Shaft

There is a sticker on my truck by the radiator that says to lubricate the front drive shaft each time the oil is changed. I have looked several times for grease fittings on the u joints of the front drive shaft and can't find any. Anyone know where the grease fittings are?

there aren't any, I think they are talking about the slip splines in the middle.

There is a fitting up in the cardigan joint on the front shaft. You need a needle fitting for your grease gun to access and will most likely have to rotate the shaft to find it. Pain in the rear.

J Body, sorry for my ignorance, but what is the "cardigan joint"?

DR3500, to lubricate the spline in the middle, one end of the drive shaft would have to be dropped and the rubber seal removed that covers the spline, right? I hope I don't have to do that every oil change.

J body is probably right, I'm not sure. A cardan joint has 2 normal u-joints and a ball and socket between them to keep it centered. the cardan joint is at the transfercase.

DR3500 nailed it. It's the double looking universal on the shaft closest to the transfer case. You'll see a small 1/8" silver disc with a little ball in the middle. This ball gets pushed in by the needle grease gun fitting so you can lube the joint.

Sometimes you can call it's name, here zerky zerky. In all honisty it is very hard to find. I'll try to snap a picture of it if I have time (packing for a week trip in VA) but I'll try to get a picture. Also mind you in my picture the paint is scraped off. I really do think they paint over it factory. Best bet is to get under the truck with a flash light and look at the 2nd u joint away from the Transfer case (it'll be the middle u joint) Put your head in front of the transfer case skid (twards the front of the truck) and look for it. You can jack up one wheel so you can turn the drive shaft. It's in there in the center of the u joint. It's very hard to find but you'll get it.

VVVEEEEERRRRRRYYYYYY funny, tried that it didn't work and the neighbors thought I was looking for a dog I don't own!!!!

How do you get to the center of the u joint? How much grease does it take, meaning are we greasing the shaft or the u joint??

thanks Jamie
