low mpg 06 quad cab tsb?

my father has about 3000 miles now on his quad cab 06 4wd auto... and so far it has gotten a best of 14-15 mpg drivin around town or on the highway.

that is not great... but it gets 8.9-9.2 mpg towin his 27ft enclosed trailer that weighs apprx 8000 lbs cruisin at around 65-70 mpg, which is pretty ridiculous?! His old 98.5 24valave didn thave nearly as much power, but at least got about 10-12 mpg (1 ton dually 2wd 5spd)towin the trailier.

Took it to the dealership after readin about the reflash on here, it is within the timeline paramaters, and the dealership denied that it existed and wouldnt look for it.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get better mileage with it, OR the TSB number so I can shove it in the dealerships faces and MAKE them fix it?

Thanks in advance

From what I've read any of the LATEST and GREATEST TSB's like for hard start(long crank time etc).Don't think there is a specific one for fuel mpg but others have reported that with the long crank stime TSB came better fuel mpg.The dealer ought to be willing to reflash ANY new software thats available and let YOU be the judge on the fuel mpg afterwards.

Sounds like your truck is about right on with the fuel mileage. I am getting almost to the same numbers, what yours is doing both pulling and just highway driving.

is that really all they would get with that little trailer?! I mean, his older 360 3/4 ton 4.10 geared ram gets 8mpg towin the same trailer... granted its about 2000 lbs lighter as a truck, but good lord?!

i know what the dealers should do, but this dealer really sucks. what is the tsb # on that hard start reflash?

any upgrades he coudl do to improve mpg that would be worth the price? from what i've seen a K&n intake and a tuner would help it a lot.

i went thru the add on stuff with my last couple trucks--- aftermarket air filters---larger exhausts---edge chip ect ect.
If it made any difference in milelage it was negledgable and am certain that i never recovered the cost of the add on's in fuel savings.
i just picked up a new 06 dually last week and am seeing numbers in the low teens driving empty at 55 and 60 mph.
Sold an 03 that i put over a 100,000 thousand on and was getting 15-16 empty and 10-12 towing.
i read about people who say they are getting 20-22 mpg but i suspect they may be a little short in their math skills. this is my 4th diesel and have never seen over 18 mpg and that was downhill with a tail wind at 50mph
At least they are pretty.

Air intake and a fueling box MIGHT help with a 1.0 give or take MPG increase and help the dealer really not help you.Someone posted those TSB' numbers this past week I thought. They just need to do the latest flash thats available.

Finally...a realistic mileage related post!!!!!!!

The best I have ever gotten is 15.5 on the highway and I have gotten as low as 7.5 pulling my 36ft enclosed trailer. The last time I kept my speed down and got in the 9 range. I can't remember the exact number.

I too think that the inflated mileage numbers people post are attempts to convince themselves that their trucks get such good mileage.

BTW...my overhead constantly reads 2mpg more than hand calculation results.

With my 06 quad, I Consistently get 17-18 unloaded, and 13-14 loaded with a 5000# camper. Surpisingly enough my overhead reads within 1mpg of my hand calc's.

I have had any TSB flash's that the dealer 'puter said I needed. Before any flashes, My best was 12mpg.

I should also note that most my driving is on Flat land, and when im on the Hwy, I use Cruise control every chance i get, and since fuel is high, I dont often go over 60mph.

i will mention that we are in NH.. and well... yea, its the 'Granite' state... LOTS of mountains lol.

i'll try and get them to reflash the comp though, a lil better mileage would greatly improve my old mans mood about spending 35k on that truck

FYI, All of my mileage is calulated by hand. I took a 4700 mile trip from IA to OR via I-90 with 200 mile trip in to Yellowstone park and adveraged 18.38 for the whole trip. BTW total weight was around 1300 Lbs in the truck and it only had 1700 miles on the clock when I went on my trip.

As for my overhead until a few weeks back in never read over 18.7 mpg and the the best reading 2 weeks back was 19.0 mpg. I get my best MPG on the county roads running between 50-62 MPH or 1500 to 1750 RPM. My best MPG I have gotten was 20.5 mpg and that was on my last tank running empty. If you want to check my math I went 410.2 miles and used 20.006 gallons of fuel. I also use 8 oz MMO and up to 16 oz of PSD in every tank.

I have to keep a close eye on my mpg as the wife was worried about it when I traded off our 2005 1500 with a 4.7L. People had told her this truck would not get as good of mpg as it did, they were wrong it gets better fuel mileage.

Just my $0.02 worth

Don't get rid of that truck, as i don't think there are many out there that do it.
i have had 4 and never have seen that kind of milelage. I run into a LOT of folks here at my business with diesels Dodge Ford and Shittylays and the vast majority of them claim 16-18 Mpg Averages , and i expect most are "embelisning " their numbers

I love these people on here that think that High MPG's are impossible!! It all has to do with where you live, how fast you drive, City Driving, HWY Driving, How agressive you are on the go pedal!!!!! There are allot of variables that go into the MPG game. I hand calculate every tank! I fill my tank up to where I can visually see the fuel in the filler neck. I know exactly how good of mileage I get with every tank!!!! Highway with 20% stop and go= 17.5mpg! Back Roads with 20% Stop and Go= 19.2mpg!!!! Now however you think that all of these people on here are stupid and couldnt pass the 3rd grade math exam, well !!!!! You are wrong! I'll bet that since your last 4 trucks are that consistent with poor mileage, you are a little on the heavy foot side of the tracks! !!!!! I have owned 3 CTD's in the past 6 years and from the 01 24v 6spd to the 03 SO auto, to the Current 06 in sig, I have seen a best of 23mpg with the 03 to a worst of 12.2mpg with the 01 Heavily Loaded!!! Lay off everyone else and lay off the GO PEDAL and you will see what I/WE mean.

Oh and of course if you live in the Mountains you are doomed from the get go. I live in the Piedmont= Rolling Hills and some flat lands!

I hand calculate every tank and I am averaging 16+ in town and best ever of 21.3 on highway. each tank is filled all the way up till i can see the fuel and no foam. No reason to "embelish" that is what mine happens to get.
