I think that they just didn’t know. When I called they told me I was wrong.I sent them a copy of what it says in the warranty book. The service manager said they don’t deal with a lot of problems with diesel’s but he would look into it.The next day he called and said when he called the warranty people they were not sure so he then submited the claim and it didn’t ask for the $100. So he is giving me my money back. While I was waiting for his reply I ask Dodge myself via e-mail below is a copy of there answer. This will make you mad! Also Thank You.

Dear Walter:
Thank you for contacting the Chrysler Group Customer Assistance Center
regarding your 2004 Dodge Ram.
Your vehicle is covered by the 7 year or 100,000 mile diesel engine
warranty. This warranty does require a $100 deductible to be paid for
any covered repair.

Thanks again for your email.

Sincerely,

Kinya

I called the number in the warranty book and explained the part that had failed and after a few minutes (of research I would think) the lady replied that the pump was part of the Cummins warranty and therefore there would be no deductable. I did the same when an injector failed and got the same answer, engine part, no deductable. But both times I had to fight the service writer to not pay the $100 up front, (my neighbor, same dealer, same truck, same year, similuar miles, same Lift pump failure 3 months later got charged $100 and I informed him, he fought it and 3 days later got his $100 back, kinda reinforces the theft some dealers try to use) even with the call center information he refused to honor it. Finally I demanded to see his boss and for them together to call Chrysler to confirm. Service writer called and got out his warranty deffination book and rudely pointed out the area where it says 84 months, 100K miles $100 deductable and wouldn't even look as I read over his shoulder the line above that one that said 60 months under 100K no charge. His warranty submitter person then informed him I was right and he grudgingly removed the $100 charge but he still stiffed me for a second oil change the next morning as even after injector change, the oil was very diluted and DC would not demand he replace oil a second time (he did diagnostics wrong by changing oil first rather than just draining some to run diganostics) then replacing injector. So buyer beware, and fight your delaer all the way to the top, you can win but it takes persistance.

Again sorry for the rant, they just disgust me to no end, and this again was a 5 Star dealer (*ealer ). no names mentioned

Still curious...if I should replace or if I should just add an external?

My truck died in the middle of the intersection Wednesday and because it was 12 degrees I thought I had gelled fuel needless to say after a quart of 911 and 2 cans of heat I was dead in the water Friday and it was even colder. I tried to drain the filter but only got a dribble so called a buddy and towed it to his shop, called the dealer and got the replacement kit for $315.00US (which i will get back Monday) and about 1 hour later was back smiling. If DCX knows the pump is a problem why not walk the walk ? I will have to say that the motor is the quietest it has been in months. So that ia 2 injectors and a lift pump in 40,000, I am sure it's all coincidence right

Mine has not gone out yet at almost 60k. It runs fine so far but I don't like the fact that my fuel pressure is so low. Mine is about 7.5 at idle and goes down from there. Almost zero with my Smarty on level 9, playing at little.

That is awesome that you already got 260k out of the stock original pump. To answer your question, my suggestion is to buy a Glacier Diesel Walbro pump and replace your stocker before it does leave you stranded. I try to anticipate some failures that are "likely" to happen and do what I can to avoid them before they happen. http://www.glacierdieselpower.com/

Some guys like the FASS systems alot too. Either one is better than the stock ones. http://www.dieselpp.com/

Yeah hearing about issues though with the lower FP makes me wonder though cause mine does seem even stock at times to loose some power in higher RPM's.

Now with either of the kits (The Glacier or the FASS) What do you have some type of plate or something for the stock LP or does the stocker just stay there?

But yes I would obviously rather replace it now then be stuck on the side of the road with a loaded trailer...lol

Any of the one's that have had the dealership replace their LP with the in-tank one have any problems with the dealership wanting to void warranty if you have a vent-kit installed. You know they seem to look for any excuse to void warranty.

I was just curious because I have Spooled-up's vent-kit on my truck and so far so good on the orginial LP at 46K, but you never know when it may go south.

Well guys, I think my LP went on me last night.

I was out and about and on my way to the gas station to fill up (I had about 1/4 tank left), sitting at a light waiting to turn left. When the light changed, I started to accelerate through and the engine stumbled and almost stalled.
At first I thought my fuel was starting to gel, ambient temp was about 5* and falling, so I proceeded to fill my tank with fresh diesel and planned to go home and add my 16oz of ps/mmo mix (ps being used currently is the white bottle) that I usually do every tank except my last tank for some reason.

Anyway, it stalled at the pump. I got it fired back up and I made it almost all the way home when it died again about 2 1/2 blocks from my house. It took me several tries to get her fired up and run long enough to make it the rest of the way home but I made it.

After I got her backed up in the driveway I tried the "key ON 3 times" trick and it revealed the 0628 code. I also plugged in my BDTD and read the DTC's with it and it said the same thing, 0628.
Then I came in and went immediately to this board and did some searching. And now I fear my LP is on it's way out.

I removed my triple dog program this morning and put my truck back to stock.
Guess I'll have to get it to the dealer tomorrow.
I did try to run it some more this afternoon though, I got her started and she idled in my driveway for several minutes, I even tried to run it up to about 2k rpms a few times. After letting her cool back down I turned it off and checked for codes again. Now I had a CEL, and was still getting the 0628 but then I also got a 0237 which I cleared and then I got a 0238 which I also cleared but still had a CEL.

Well after a few minutes of messing around, I got the codes cleared (except the 0628) and the CEL was gone. I then thought that as long it is running seemingly okay, I'll take a little test spin. So I drove around the neighborhood a couple times, it was all good till I got back to my drive way, I backed in and I let her idle for a minute or tow then she stalled.

I got her fired her back up and sat at idle again with no problems for a few minutes then tried another test drive. This time I drove around, again ending with me back in my driveway at idle and it didn't stall even after several minutes.

So now I'm confused. Is my LP done for? Is it just on it's way out but still functioning a little? Could there be some other explanation?
I haven't checked my fuel filter yet, it's just too darn cold outside right now. But it shouldn't be dirty, I just changed it not too long ago.
How do I know if I have the external LP and not the in-tank mounted one?
My truck is an 04.5 as you can tell from my sig.
I have 28k miles on her.

Sorry for the long winded post.

Thanks,
MT

MT, My truck done almost the same thing, but when I took it for a spin I had to be towed back then towed to the dealer. Also at the dealership the next day they said it was running fine. After digging a little deeper they found it was the lift pump and replaced it. On my invoice it says “Intermittent Short” if that helps any.

One more question.

Why is it that it only seems to stall at idle or low throttle. It seems to be fine at most speeds even neighborhood speeds (25mph). Is this just coincidence?

Besides the possibility of getting stranded, do I run a risk of damaging anything else if I drive it like this?

How long does it take for the dealer to replace the LP and if I don't already have one, will I automatically get the in-tank unit or do I have to request it?

Okay so it was a few more questions.

I believe the Injector pump can go bad from a bad lift pump from being run dry or low pressure? Not sure exactlk BUT I do know that I have heard make sure your lift pump is in good condition so your injector pump doesnt go out..

Okay guys, so I got my lift pump taken care of. BTW, the new one in the tank is MUCH louder than the stock one was for some reason. Is this normal? I thought it would be quieter being farther away.

Anyway I was wondering, I went in with a full tank of diesel, it came out with a quarter tank left. No miles were added to the odometer so OBVIOUSLY they had to drain the tank some to perform the required surgery. Well, shouldn't they have topped the tank off after they did the work? I mean, it's not my fault I discovered the lift pump went out while I had a full tank. With fuel prices the way they are these days I figure it cost me about $65!!

Those of you who have had this done... did you get your truck back with more or less fuel in it than it had before the operation??

Depends on the dealership and how they store the fuel while they change it. Mine was full and I pulled the tank with a trans jack and replaced the pump with out draining the tank but it took 2 of us and a tie down strap. I would sure want my fuel back!
