I have an '04 2500 Ram with 37,xxx miles on it.

Yesterday someone else was driving the truck and went to test the 4WD. While the truck was running but stationary he shifted into 4WD-Low. The truck seemed to shudder and lurch and eventually died.

I got in the drivers seat and returned the trans to 2 WD and tried to start it up. After a couple of turns of the key it started but died within a few seconds. This happened 3 or 4 times. It finally started and stayed running and we drove about 1/2 mile back to my house.

I did a code check and got the P0628.

This morning I drove the truck to work about 12 miles. No problems.

Now, I would guess the shifting into 4WD and the truck stalling out was most likely just a coincidence. But I've never had any problem like this before and the truck has relatively low mileage for the pump failure.

The truck is well maintained and driven lightly. No towing or racing.

The Edge Juice has always been on "1" for economy.

I reseated the electrical fitting to the pump before I drove today. The code has not cleared, but as I say the truck ran fine for 12 miles (speeds up to 50mph).

My question: Is it typical for a pump fail to start off intermittant and the fail completely? Or does it go out with no warning and just stop and not run at all?

I see Geno's has the replacement pump for $179.

 

Mine failed like that.

A bunch of restarts got me a few miles home, barely, and that was it. Tow time. I got a new one under warrantee but immediately ordered a better setup and changed it before the second one failed.

Go with something better than another stock type replacement. I like the Glacier Walbro setup for a number of reasons and have been running mine for about 115,000 miles since the stocker failed.

In your case you won't have to drop the tank or change the pickup in the tank. And if it fails again it will be easy to slip a new one in on the frame rail.

I've got the thing for sale so the one from Geno's makes more sense to me.

Looks like about a 1 hour job.

 

It's under warranty, take it in and have it changed to the intank model.

 

Well I would, but I'm concerned about being denied because of the Edge Juice.

If that would do it....yeah.

But seeing as how there would still be "tells" (hole in the exhaust for EGT temp sensor) along with pigtails and other little things, I doubt it would do me any good. Dodge isn't very understanding or interested in doing warranty labor/parts with the company in it's current financial condition.

I have a buyer willing to "buy as is" knowing about the stalling and possible need for the pump replacement. I'm not really comfortable doing that so the quick and easy (cheapest also) is just to go ahead and do the pump from Geno's.

 

200 miles last few days. Running fine.

Decided to keep the truck until next year.
