Leaking Pinion Seals
Leaking Pinion Seals
I noticed oil all over the rear of my 7 mo old 2006 truck thats never been been hooked to anything besides a lawnmower and is driven 200 miles a day round trip to work on the interstate. I took it into the dealer Wed before christmas and havnt heard a word until today when i called. They said the front and rear pinion seals were bad and they didnt have the parts in yet and to call back next week. Should these repairs take this long? I will be lucky If i get my truck back within 3 weeks. Is this a normal thing i am going to do every 30k miles? Will i have to pay for the refill of fluids into the diffs? Just wondering what i need to expect because i have never has probs with anything like this.
Sounds like your dealer is a bum. I've had pinion seal replaced in the past on other vehicles and it is quick and easy. I've done them in the past too. they shoul have these on hand or be able to get them from another dealer or even Napa. I would be worried they wrecked it and are getting it fixed.

I have a 2004 and my rear pinion seal began leaking with only 28,000 miles on it. Took it to the dealership and they replaced the pinion seal, took a total of 45 minutes. It was covered under warranty along with the lube that was used to top off the rear diff. They said if the seal leaked again, they would replace the yolk assembly along with the seal to be safe. Two weeks ago, I was beneath the truck installing a muffler delete pipe. Looked at the rear diff. and low and behold, the rear pinion was leaking again, this time with 32,000 miles on it. I have never done any heavy towing with this rig. Anyway, call the dealership, they said bring it by on the Friday before Christmas and they would repair it. I took it in and after about 30 minutes, the service manager informed me that they didn't have the part in stock and it would be in the following week. Why they couldn't have called me and told me the part wasn't in and save me a trip over there beats me. Anyway, the Tuesday after Christmas I took the truck in and they replaced the yolk assembly and pinion seal. Lets see how long this one will last.
The problem is not replacing the pinion seal, it is getting the parts through dodge warranty that is the problem. My front pinion seal went out, took a darn near two weeks to get it. I drove it in the meantime.
Dealer took the truck a 1:00 told my wife to come back at 3:00 Wife came back and they told her the mechanic was pulled off.... come back at 4:30 when they close.

man oh man..... i got my truck back and its not good.........When they changed the oil they spilled oil all over the motor and didnt clean it up, when they changed the trans fluid they left the pan and everything around it dripping in trans fluid, the front and rear end from changing the pinion bearings is dripping with fluid, THEN THE BIGGIE IS THEY LET SOME JACK LEG FOOL wash my truck with something with grit in it and my whole clearcoat is silver looking on my black truck and is ruined. And on top of all this i have a huge vibration that rattles my windows at 65 to 70 but is felt at any speed and this morning i had a spot of rear end dope under the rear end..... so now what do i do
I was on my 2nd pinion seal in the fornt by 66,000 miles +/-. After the second time I took my front Drive shaft to the best drive line shop in my area and them change the U-joints and rebalance the shaft. The shaft was WAY WAY out before the change and zeroed in nicely after. I never changed another seal after that. I had a 136k on it when I traded it!
If they just changed the pinion seal, you will be back. The yoke needs to be changed to. The mechanic here changed mine and it was a standard to replace both. The reason is that the original yoke will have a fine groove in it and the oil will manage to get through it. In addition ,the new yoke is made of better material and is more stout. I had my front replaced at 32k. They had the truck for 2 hours. Nice job and I was gone. I feel sorry for your disaster, totally unacceptable.
OK, another update......I tried another dealer and i got the same ole same ole crap. They said the vibration is normal and all these trucks do it. So i asked, its normal for the truck to vibrate going doen the road where the door panel rattles and you cant see in the rear view mirror? He says yes sure is and they cant do anything about that. Another prob was that the rear spring bushing was speaking very very loud and i told him that i has to get under it every week and spray it with wd40 to shut it up and to fix that too. They did, instead of replacing the bushing they sprayed a whole bottle of liquid wrench on it.......So i spent 2 days in a rental car for them to spray my truck with liquid wrench......dodge is a joke
