Key cycle/ code ?

A guy I work with has an 03 auto. he has not had the lift pump replaced yet. He has had some instrument cluster problems. Anyway, tried starting his truck the other morning and it just cranked and cranked. I told him about the key cycle to see if any codes popped up. he said he did that and all that popped up was gas pump symbol no codes, has anyone ever experienced that? I was puzzled, but I am not very bright to begin with I actually thought he was joking. anyone, anyone?

thanks

You have to cycle the key three times without going to "crank" position, and then leave it in the "on" position and wait. The odometer mileage will go away and the code will show ( if there is one) be ready to write it down because it will say "done" with ---done--- dash marks in a few seconds after it shows the code. At least this method worked on my 06. HTH

Makes me think of the lift pump immediately, and it will not necessarily show a code(s). Tell him to bite the bullet and upgrade; might as well get it out of the way.

yeah, I know how to do it. just not sure if he did it right. he said that symbol came up and I have never heard of that. when my lift pump went it gave me a code.

My bro-in-laws lift pump was dead for awhile before the truck started showing it. No codes, just long cranks and numerous cranks, rough idle, etc. Replaced the pump and no troubles since. Some ppl get codes and some ppl don't.

well I dug a little deeper on him and it sounds like he is having some cpu problems too. he said he will be driving and the wipers will come on, or when he has his lights on his beams will click on and off without doing anything to them, so I think he may have some additional problems too.

thanks for the feedback!
