Jiffy Lube

Hey Guys,
Just had my first oil change done at Jiffy Lube @ 6000 miles. The oil was pretty dark (Black) and I decided not to wait till 7500. About 5 miles after I fueled up and checked the oil level. It was still very dark. I started thinking the oil was never changed. I looked at the filter and it looked like a new filter with greasy hand prints and some oil drips below.Could they have changed the filter and left the old oil in the crankcase ? Or is the dark colored oil normal .Any thoughts appreciated.

O YES! Jiffy lube is in the hot seat right now for selling services and not doing them. PLEASE don't take your $40,000+ to Jippy Lube, They flat out suck. There oil filters, mileguard I believe, are made by Fram. Fram oil filters I believe are not a recommended oil filter and could void your warranty, there is a TSB about this. Did they use a diesel oil? What kind, what weight? Do a search on oil filters and oil. You'll have weeks of reading. I recommend chevron delo 400, shell rotella or valvoline blue in a 15w40 weight. As far as oil filters, a fleetguard or baldwin. Hope that helps. I don't want to freighten you, just educate.

Yes, the oil should be clean as can be. Especially in the new common rail trucks. There shouldn't be ANY sign of discoloration for at least 4k.

....ok I was going to leave that up there for awile, but that wouldn't be very nice of me. The 05 up trucks will turn oil black....no make that BLACK!!! Stain your hands old chevy 6.2 black. It's normal. You can drain that crankcase for nearly an hour, fill the crankcase, put a new filter on. Start it up and let her run.....and the oil will be BLACK on the dipstick. Now whether it's normal good, or normal bad remains yet to be seen. The TSB bucky stated is older than this web site so I'm not really certain how much merit it has. Personally I use the Mopar/Fleetguard/Cummins filter and Rotella in my own truck.

My dealer insisted that they do the first oil change. I've done the rest.

Unless it was an absolute emergency, I wouldn't let Jiffy Lube change my fluids anymore. Even at that I'd provide them with the oil and filter and watch them like a hawk. Had a bad experience years ago with them that ruined a manual transmission.

I'm sure they changed the oil, but my issue with Jiffy Lube is WHAT did they replace it with?

That's the first I've heard of that. In my experience, the 4 common rails I've owned will turn the oil black within about 50 miles of the oil change. No kidding-they all seem to do it. Has NOTHING to do with how well the oil lubricates. I've heard people theorizing that it's the post injection cycle that blackens it. I don't know whether that's true or not, but it sounds possible at least.

LOL...
Yeah Jiffy is about on par with Walmart... You get what you pay for! Well... Maybe not! Hahaha
I have noticed that the 04 pre-cats ... the oil will stay clean for 5-8K miles... but Post-Cats the oil stay clean til you pour it in the truck. I thought about Testing my theory by just removing the Cat... but it might get misplaced in the process.
Oh well... As long as the oil analisys keep saying drive... I won't worry about it.

I always thought the oil turned black because it was almost impossible to get all the oil out of the engine at a 10min oil change place. But then again my old 12v has nice golden brown till 165k miles. But then I had a timing issue arise and the oil went black and never has gone back to golden brown.

My new 04.5 the oil is a nice charcoal color. But not Black like my 94 is even after changing the oil every 3-4k.

Its all from byproducts of the combustion process, usually attributed to ignition timing. Black oil does not essentially mean bad oil. The days of pulling your dipstick and determining if you due an oil change are gone, oil sampling is the only way to truly determine the condition of your engine oil.

The Fram filters are fine...IF you use the PH3976A. It HAS to have the 'A'. The neoprene in the old style was breaking down and clogging the cooling nozzles. It has been fixed. This is according to a press release by DC and Fram.
Just educating you.
Now, this is for my '01. I am assuming it will be the same case with the 3rd Gens.

Does Jiffy Lube offer diesel rated oil?

After tonight I'm gonna use them if they do! I forget to take out the drain plug in the oil pan / tank. Spilled oil all over the driveway, then I forgot to replace the drain plug and poured 3 qts of new oil in the pan before I realized what a moron I was.

Now I know how Beagle1 feels.

Hey Guys,
Thanx for all the input.Looking at the filter all I can see is PERFORM... . It looks like someone wiped the dust off the oil pan around the drain plug and there is some nasty old oil dripping off the crossmember under the oil filter.I believe the oil they advertised was Shell Rotella 15/40 but dont hold me to the weight. It also looked like there was a wiring harness just below the oilfilter that will probabley be well lubed every time the filter is changed. What would you guys do at this point ?
Thanx,
Phil
