Jacobs Exhaust Brake - pyro tap?

I'm having a Jacobs brake installed in my truck today. Saw in some literature that it has a pyro tap? Can anyone verify this for 2006 automatic models?

That would be sweet. I was dreading tapping my downpipe.

As for tapping pre-turbo, no thanks!

According to the Cummins site, it is tapped for pyro. Any reason why you don't want to run pre-turbo?

Thanks for the response.

I'm just super paranoid about stuff getting in there, whether it's from the install itself or from something not from the factory breaking off and sailing downstream.

Havent had a problem with 2 trucks, and 3 probes...
Didnt drop the turbo, just step up the bits gradually, vaccuumed it out before starting her up and havent had a single problem. I have two pre-turbo egt probes on my '05(one for the edge, one guage)

Does anyone know if the fitting is 1/4" or 1/8"?

In case anyone is searching for this information, I emailed Jacobs and they replied saying the tap is 1/4 - 18 NPTF.

Astue observers will note that most pyros are sold with either a 1/8 or 1/4" NPT fitting, so it begs the question as to whether a NPT application will be okay in a NPTF fitting. Information on NPT vs. NPTF can be found here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NPTF_Taper_Pipe_Thread

And I did find this other link that said it's okay to use a NPT application in a NPTF fitting:

http://www.cutting-tool-supply.com/T.../NPTVsNPTF.htm

But I think I'll start another thread to ask the gurus around here just to make sure.

Well, Jacobs emailed me back and said:

Dave,
I'd use a 1/4- 18 NPTF fitting, like God intended.
Why ask for trouble?
So I guess I'll be looking for a gauge that uses that fitting!

Port plug is hard to remove

When I did mine, I was surprised to see that the end of the 'plug' was actually torn metal, implying that it was sealed in place after assembly. I was a little concerned about the integrity of the remaining female threads, but the probe bushing went in fine and sealed up well.

I did have the brake in place for about 5K miles before installing the pyro probe, so maybe operation melted the sealer.

What pyro fitting did you use? NPT or NPTF?

Used fitting that came with Quad Commander

HOV,

I presume it was an NPTF, but don't really know. I used a little never seize and checked for leaks later by looking for carbon traces. None found.

I also didn't know about the hi test Loc-Tite. I fought it and finally wound up drilling it out and retapping with 1/4 NPT. After that, it worked just fine. I wanted post-turbo so I could install a BD Cooldown with just one pyro.
Real happy with the function.
